We had a blind mare retire with us in August, all went well when introduced to her group and she latched onto a gelding in the herd who she would followed everywhere.
Last Sunday she came in season and instead of flirting with all the boys in her gang ( she is the only mare in my 'special needs' group ) she spent the whole day nudging a black TB mare over the fence in the next door field. Since then she whinnies for her constantly, she is stabled opposite her but they are turned out in different fields. The other day I turned her out first then put the other group out with the black mare, she came across the field from at least 100M away and tried to barge the gate and walked up and down the fence whinnying. In the end we had to get her in as she was going to hurt herself.........I can't put her with that group as they are too sharp so she could get hurt hence the reason being to turn her out with my special needs 30+'s.
I can't believe how she recognises this mare from afar, she is totally blind and what is with this infatuation? Any ideas?!!

Sometimes horses just take a liking to each other.
Is there no way that you can turn them out together?
S :D

Im not sure entirely, might be to do with hormones the TB black mare gives off or like above horses are more tuned in than some expect and do form friendships.

Could you put the black TB mare in with the 30+ special needs (bless them!)?

Your place really sounds lovely, horses are lucky that there are people like you who will care for them no matter what.

Very complicated friendships here! Black mare is only 20 and very active with her friends who are 3 TB's she would hate to be separated from that mad lot, they are also turned out in a field with a river running alongside. They drink from the river..........Belle the blind mare is too vulnerable , she couldn't go in that field and the others would be horrid to her they are bitchy mares!
My fascination is that she can smell her from such a distance she has been next door to her the since August so don't know why this has started! Thought I knew horses...... but you learn something everyday, especially their instincts in this situation.

this is exactly my thought, I wouldn't hesitate to do this, not being with this mare is obviously causing a certain level of stress in the blind mare, I would try this OP, bless her x

I will rethink the groups and see what happens, if she carries on tomorrow will have to have a shuffle about........crazy after 4 months of being next to her she has decided she doesn't want her male guide......

It'll work itself out, prioritise those two and work it out around them, if the other mare is a good sort she could move with ease to the 'lighter' life :D sure you will sort it out :D sounds like you have a lovely set up, a rewarding vocation, and a heart in the right place... :D

My mare always fancied just mares on the first day or two of her season. After that it was anything at all that paid her attention!

I bought a mare who was highly stressed and vunerable when she came to me. She ignored the gelding she was turned out with, in favour of the mare in the next field. Both became very difficult if one was taken out of the paddocks and were dangerous to handle, their separation anxiety was so extreme.
I turned them both out together in a mixed herd and within a short time, the problem resolved itself. They remained friendly, but intergreted with the others and no longer screamed when one left the field.
