I am going to start loaning my friends cob mare next week so I'm sat here all excited and eager to get started with her! :D

One of the things I want to get started on is her mane. My friend hogged it last year and so its growing out and looking awful at the moment :o poor lady :p

She has a full mane on both sides of her neck when it grows out and its very thick and sort of looks like the start of dreadlocks at the moment (friend didn't know whether to grow it out of hog it) but I'd love to get it all brushed out and conditioned and start training it. I'll get some pictures of her mane up soon but...where do I start?!

Just imagine the thickest, bushiest little mane you can...and thats about it ;) I've never experienced a double mane before, can it lie on one side or not?! Any homemade conditioner recipes? :D

Thanks for any tips or advice :)

My cob has a double mane and I leave it to grow on both sides, I think you can train it but as we don't do any showing I just use lots of mane and tail spray.

I use Tesco's Value conditioner on my horses' thick tails. They come up really nicely.

Smells nice too. And best of all, it's cheap!!

keep it clean and when it is long enough keep it plaited, or in 'pony tails' on the correct side. It will take months to train the hair folicles (sp?) to grow in the right direction but it will be lovely.

Don't cut it, or pull it just yet- you need some weight behind it to help it lay flat.

Coat Shine is the same stuff as mane and tail spray- and lots of people use furniture polish on the tails!

forestfantasy its very tempting to hog it...but she will look so pretty if it all grows out properly! She looks a bit..well..manly with it hogged off :p

Step 1: try to get a brush...comb...anything through it! :D

Agree, don't touch it until you can plait it! And then keep it plaited for ages until its learnt to stay flat LOL :D

i agree dont do anything other than comb it till its long enough to plait, then leave in field plaits. pig / baby oil as a detangler or 7 day mud away if you`re feeling flush
