Hi guys!
I recently purchased a 12 year old ISH gelding, who had been living out on grass for a year. He wasn't fed either. He is extremely unfit, and will only canter about 4 paces before stopping. He tends to lean into the middle of the school too, and his shoulder drops onwards on corners. Are there any exercises I can help him with this?
I have started him on Calm and Condition cubes, as well as Equitop Myoplast Protein supplement (used by the Whittakers.) he passed a five stage vetting last week but the vet noted he had a very weak top line which needs to get built up. I took him on a hack today because I heard hacking up hills is good, but we had a little bucking on the common going downhill. I'm just looking for advice really - how to make him more willing to stay in canter? And how to help build up muscle? X

Are you kidding?

Sadly I don't think they are, OP you posted about this horse before and were given very good advice on a fitness plan and it clearly said to walk only for some weeks, to build up very gradually and certainly no cantering for many weeks.

If you want him to have a long life and remain sound then it will pay to go slowly, if you rush about in canter you risk him breaking down before you even get started properly, cantering will put his muscles, tendons and ligaments under stress that they are not ready for, it will not help build up his topline and he will not be very willing to canter until he is more fit.

He may have cantered during your trial and for the vetting but that does not mean he should continue to do so, give the poor horse a chance and maybe he will prove to be forward going once he is fit.

It's a dud. Sell it. You have been conned. Horses should automatically be able to canter without any training whatsoever. Everyone knows that.

Go buy a fresh off the track tb. They canter for hours.

Equitop Myoplast may be used by the Whittakers but I doubt very much if they pay for it.

It's an extremely expensive way to feed spirulina, the only active, tested, ingredient in it.

Dont run before you can walk.

Take it slow, build up from walk. Don't rush! Value your horse and respect that fitness isn't an issue that can be solved overnight.

You said it yourself - the horse is unfit!

So he is not lazy, he is not fit enough to do what you are asking him to do. It is your responsibility to fitten him correctly for the work you expect him to do.

You have been given some excellent advice and a fittening programme, which you should follow.

If you're going to troll, at least make some effort to do it properly.

27th March you were sharing a 14:2 new forest and wondering if you were experienced enough to own a horse. 2 days later, 29th March, you were going to look at a tb later on that week, yet on the same day, you already had a tb mare and were asking about feeding it. 2nd April you were moving her to a new yard. On 5th April you already owned several tbs. 20th April you were concerned about her but by 23rd April you'd already had her put to sleep and got over grieving for her enough to feel you were ready to buy a new horse. 27th April your YO was warning you off buying another tb but by 1st May you'd already bought this horse you have now, and on 2nd May you were looking at a new horse who's pelvis was out.

I really hope for the sake of these horses that you are trolling and that they are fictional.

I'm actually a little upset about this. I was sharing a horse but decided to buy. I bought a thoroughbred and owned her less than a month. She collapsed on a jump and refused to go into indoor school, so I called the vet out. The vets are Chiltern on Chobham. They discovered a tumour pressing down on her optical nerve, which was affecting her vision and going from light to dark spaces. It was decided that she would be put down because it was starting to affect her balance. I was absolutely devastated and find your lack of sympathy very upsetting actually. I now own an ISH, as stated in my previous post. It wasn't easy to buy another horse. It was actually really upsetting. I also NEVER claimed to be training to be an instructor. I enquired how a person would go about doing this...

I also didn't realise I would be so heavily critiqued for using Myoplast. I was simply asking advice. I thought that was the purpose of this forum?

It's actually taken me a few weeks to work up the courage to respond to being called a troll. I am not a troll. I have just been really unlucky :(

No-one has criticized you for using Myoplast it works. I just gave you what I thought was helpful advice that spirulina does the same and is cheaper.

Can you respond to post number 11 please, numbers in right of green band at the top of each post, because at the moment, despite your protests, it does look to be pretty impossible that you are for real?

You were not really criticised for using myoplast, or by me for possibly being a troll but for expecting an unfit horse to canter and feeding it up to enable you to do so, if you are not a troll you should take the advice given by myself and bonkers to get your horse fit slowly by walking not stuffing it full of high energy feed and cantering to get it fit otherwise you run the risk of damaging him.

If you use this forum as it is by most people it can be very helpful, there are many knowledgeable people willing to offer help and advice but you do need to post carefully and clearly if you want to receive that advice, you also need to read the replies and respond to the helpful ones otherwise some of us will stop bothering to answer.
