I have just seen a post on NL about the rip off rates of vet bills and thought i'd post this since it just highlights the ridiculous mark up we have to cope with from vets in the UK.

Both of my dogs have had to have full vacc for everything incuding rabies out here. Cost for each dog, with wormers...... you'll never believe this. Less than fifteen quid!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went along to the surgery (erm well a shack) armed with LOTS of money and nearly fell off my chair when I got the bill.

Ok, so the vet is an old fella who loves animals so much that he makes his practice available to all but even so, how is this possible? The wormer was Drontal plus and the vac drugs check out so it's not like I am being given sub standard drugs out here. Much as I love good old blighty, we get hammered in every which way don't we? I could have LOADS of dogs out here if only I had the space to keep them.

Further to that, human drugs are just as good, you can get pretty much whatever you want. Pack of 500mg paracetamol (10) is less than 50 pence.

India has it's upsides... downsides however are the level of animal abuse I witness every single day. Not deliberate in most cases just shocking poverty and ignorance. Sooooo would like to set up my own rescue centre.

part of what you pay in this country covers overhead i.e. the practice building, the xray machine the ultrasound scanner the constant courses the vets go on etc etc If you didnt pay for those the vets would have to run the practice out of a shack with limited old out of date equipment. If you go to a vaccine clinic in this country that offers nothing other than vaccines then the cost is much less because the overheads are much less.

dougals mum - I am slightly touchy so i apologise !!
I am a vet and people seem to think this means that I have a massive house and flash car and that all the money that they pay at reception goes straight into my pocket. In fact the xray machines my boss just bought could have paid my salary for the next 4 years.

Oh hey, don't apologise... Good friends of ours are vets, just into buying a practice and are BROKE BIG TIME. Wasn't aimed at vets, more the damn government forcing us all to charge/pay more than perhaps we would like. There is a lot to like about the UK and animal husbandry on the whole is one of the biggest. Not knocking vets in the UK. Have a LOT to be thankful to you all for. xx

Vet bills were far cheaper in Sri Lanka (not that we had any!) but I don't know whether its the same in India, but things like leads and collars/dog beds were super expensive if you wanted anything half decent. We always got grandparents to bring some out to us when they came on holiday!
