My normal vet doesn't charge to fill in insurance claim forms (and believe me, I've had a lot in the last 12 months!). However in my most recent claim, my horse was initially seen my another vet. She was briefly on livery when I was on holiday, so the YO called their own vet initially, with my approval.

The amount was tiny, but as I was claiming on my own vet's bill for the remaining investigations and treatment, I also had to inform them of the initial visit from the other vet. The insurance company sent them a claim form. I've just been advised by the livery yard that I now owe the vet £17 for filling in the claim

Is this normal? Am I just lucky that mine doesn't charge? The nature of the first vets visit was just a physical exam - no x-rays, scans, drugs, treatments etc. My own vet would have filled in all the detail of what was wrong etc, so the original vet can only have had about a few sentences to put in.

Anyway I'm sure I'll pay up, but just wanted to canvass opinion on this one.

I recently filed my first claim, filled out most of the forms myself just left a bit for the vet to fill in. Bearing in mind, they scanned every inch unnecessarily and messed up blood tests etc, they still charged me £40 insurance form fees!
ROBBERY!

Ah, I didn't realise! Thanks ;)

Maybe, but the bill was actually in the name of the YO, not me, but hey ho. Just as well the usual vets don't charge, you can imagine what they've had to do in the last 12 months for me :(

I know but he would still know that the horse was one from another practice. yeah I dread to think what the total would be between M, HB and the wee ginge, bet the ins co loves you lol

My vets charge £11 to fill in a claims form.... ROBBERY!
I have just done my first claim, I hve 1 year to claim for meds and supplements i.e. bute & 99% glucosamine supplement... I need 100 sachets of bute every few months and glucosamine monthly and if I was to claim each time I got a tub I would be paying £11 per time for the form to be done so I have converted to claiming the lot at the end of my year other wise it would cost me a fortune!!!

I wish I got paid each time I filled in a form!!

My vets have recently started charging £18 per form. I wouldn't mind so much but the forms can sit with them for several weeks before being filled in. Several that they say have been sent on to my insurance company have never reached the insurance company (I always leave them with a stamped addressed envelope). The most recent was handed in to them on 7th February and still hasn't made it to the insurance company despite numerous phone calls :(

Lets see. Vets time-£120/hr is going rate. Insurance form filling-minimum 10minutes time. Probably more like half an hour by the time you look up the records, ensure you are doing a good job so that the insurance company has less chance to wriggle out of paying..
Admin costs are keeping records, doing histories etc. I actually think £17 is very little. even £40 is within the vets discretion, £60 would not be unexpected! It's nice when you aren't charged for them, but actually thats because a vet is being a good samaritan and bad business person, not because the charging vet is bad..
