vet fees insurance question

hi

i am in the process of renewing the insurance for my pony. He is a 14.2 8y/o cob who i mainly use for hacking. Looking at insurance quotes they seem to either cover vets fees to £3000 per incident or £5000, with significantly different quotes between the two (obviously).

my question is are there many things that my horse could become ill with/ injure where the bill is likely to be a lot more than £3000. obviously its impossible to be sure as fees can always go up due to unexpected complications, but just as an idea. also i am the sort of person that if anything terrible happened i would not want to prolong his suffering for my sake. but i would hate the situation where he had something wrong with him which is cureable but i am unable to afford the treatment.

I have maxed out the £5000 cover on two occasions, so have been grateful for it! But I think I've just been unlucky. One had to have stifle surgery at Newmarket, the other had to have MRI. Obviously there was a lot more treatment involved to reach £5000 in each case. Be aware not all insurers cover MRI in full. Petplan does. It will be well over £1000 if you need it, and it is a useful diagnostic tool. However, you could still progress with treatment without extortionate diagnostics.

If there's a huge difference in premium, you may prefer to go for the lower level of cover. I've got so many exclusions myself now that I don't even know why I bother with insurance any more!

I'm with NFU and have £5,000 per incident vet's cover. Have just put a claim in for what was a straight forward colic operation which was £4,200. Complicated colic ops will be more than that.

yes i have been with nfu this last year. think im going to stick with them & the £5000 vet fees. would hate to not be able to afford his treatment, a few thousand is a lot to find quickly if something went wrong.
