Update!

i was down most of the morning and just sat watching him in the field, just before the vet was due to arrive, i went into the field to get him, now this is the horse that couldnt walk first thing this am.... he bloody well did his thing that he did and charged off with me at the other end of the leadrope, as he went i flung it over his neck (after so long, i have it off to a fine art!) He wanted to go back into one of the fields i opened up last night for more grass..... anyway, as the vet pulled up i started to walk/drag him out of the field, we took him onto the nearest heli-pad for the vet to see him. (this is where my late mare was PTS, in sight of her fellow herd members - it really helped them to understand and cope IMO)
ANYWAY..............
to cut a long story short - the vet said he could, try and give him another chance!!! SOoooooooo, he gave him 2 jabs, a strong steriod, and a a painkiller that he said is 30 times strong than bute. He said that by 5pm, i will know if this is the end for him or not???
Its totally messed my head up as i had said my goodbyes. William knew something was going to happen, and suddenly went into wild, unhandled 3 year old colt mode! (hes known for doing this when vets are around!) the vet thinks that he isnt actually in pain, or that he isnt actually suffering, despite the fact it looks on the surface that he is. He was really happy that mentally, he was full of it.
As i say, its really confused me! the vet did say that the reason he may have suddenly deterioated could be something to do with his spinal cord and nervous system, but he said it could possibly heal....
I requested a long established vet from the practice so i have to go with his judgement and advice, he did say that if i want him PTS at any piont, just call him back and he'll come back, but he said its worth giving him a last chance. So that i have done.
emotional rollercoaster!
If he is still struggling/no improvement in the next 24/36 hours, or mentally he looses his fight to live, then the vet will be called back asap.

Bugger - I'd have still probably have said goodbye, after all it's only postponing the inevitable.

However, it's always such a difficult one, who can say...

it would be amazing if he did improve, the vet said for all i know i may get 2 more years out from him - but i am in the real world and very much doubt it would be 2 years! As my mum has just said on the phone, i will know by this evening if his back end co-ordination is improving or not.

Its REALLY confused me Amymay! the vet said it was my decision but he honestly thought we should give me a last chance as mentally - he is on top form. (trying to rear up for the jabs, trying to drag me to the grass, shouting and screaming when he was put in his box etc)

Don't know the details but I think its easier for you if you feel you have given him this last chance. At least if you do have him PTS you have eliminated all traces of doubt. Big hug - not a nice time for you.

Awww, sorry to hear all that... I've never heard of a vet doing that before? I suppose all your doing is giving him every chance possible and as long as he's not in any pain (with that stronger painkiller) then you shouldn't feel bad or anything. Just don't get your hopes up.... that way, you shouldn't have to put yourself through it all quite so much next time. as Nosey said... at least this way you will have no doubts at all. It's the most horrible thing in the world to have to do, but you're looking out for him...... and that's the absolute most you can do. Hope you get sorted out, one or another xx

I knew it was coming but It didnt make it any easier..

I could of given ted another chance.. but for what? another 8 days filled with Bute and steriods and anti-biotics? How long to renal failure kicks in. I could of had him injected and see how we got on.. But i could not stand by and watch him in agony AGAIN for the second time in 8 days..

I just made the decision, to fill him with painkiller, Sedate him so he was comfortable. Sort the paperwork out, Make him happy, and let him rest..

well i turned him out slightly later than the vet suggested, so he had been in his box slightly longer and when he came out, he can walk straighter yes, but still wasnt 100% in the field, but then, when he saw the other horses move into the next field - he trotted - then cantered!! admittedly a bit sideways but the vet says he isnt distressed, isnt in pain, and not suffering?
i am emotionally drained and exhuasted, i think he is def telling me he wants to be here a little longer, i have told him though, i cant see him suffer, lets see how long he wants to be here....

Sorry to hear your story Nailed.
