Trying to encourage a friend to get back into small animal Vet Nursing, at least part time - she would be brilliant and a job would deffo sort her life out and give her independence from her controlling husband (and give her the money to keep her horse!!).

Are there many jobs about? Is it v competitive and does it pay OK? Is recruitment normally done locally or are there a few major agencies?

She qualified in a different country, hence why she needs a push and I guess doesn't quite know what it is all about in this country.

All advice gratefully received.

(PS I know this should be in careers, but thought more vet & vet nurses would look on here).

Not many jobs at the moment but there are jobs for qualified nurses (not sure how overseas qualifications stand). Agency work may be best to get her started somone like http://www.a1locums.com/. Otherwise tell her to register and look on vetnurse.co.uk. Places can be competitive and hours vary greatly. Wage is basic, normally £12,000 - £18,000 from trainee to head nurse. I'm really really stuggling to get a job right now and have branced out into sales and marketing instead. I have excellent references including BEVA president but no joy so far. Best of luck to her and worth pursuing espcially if she is looking for a part time position or locuming with an agency.

thought i'd add VN times is the publication for vet nurses to seek jobs generally as well as articles. Might be worth her trying to get hold of the odd copy, I don't know how to suscribe but found this which seems to explain it, not sure how old it is so prices may have changed!

"VN Times is sent free of charge to qualified VNs as well as all trainee VNs - which now includes those who are in their first year of training.

Annual subscriptions are also available to other subscribers for £80 (worldwide, airmail). Additional issues are available at £8 each (including p&p).

To subscribe, call Lisa Johnson on 01733 383539, email lisajohnson@vetsonline.com or send payment with your name and the address of where copies are to be sent, to:

VN Times Subscriptions,
Veterinary Business Development,
Olympus House,
Werrington Centre,
Peterborough, PE4 6NA.
ive just copied and pasted from the website www.vetsonline.com"

and edited to add i've just secured my training position! I've worked as a lay nurse for 3 years but really need to qualify now as things are tightening up and it's harder to get a lay nurse position.

there are plenty of jobs advertised for qualified nurses and generally we have found it quite difficult to recruit when we've had vacancies. lots of vacancies, not enough qualified nurses to fill them. trainee posts on the other hand are few and far between.

My sister's actually a VN and she found it fairly easy to get the job, she applied at local vets and it just so happened that a very local one had a placement. She's been there for about 6 years now, extremely hard work so don't go into it lightly but she loves it :-)

Hi there,

Nursing is a great career, especially vet nursing. Where has your friend looked so far for nurse jobs? Does she have prior experience? Since getting hired at great places has been very difficult lately, I would say that your friend should really work on her resume and all of the other little things. She needs to make sure that everything is perfect with her experience, volunteer hours, etc because it is the little things that will set her apart when looking for this job. There are jobs out there, you just need to make sure that you are not the average person walking through the door. Best of luck to you and your friend.

Shannon, RN
