I am really annoyed - why should i ask someone else if I can have alternative treatment to MY horse?

I have just been told that a particular back person will not attend my horse unless I inform my vet- told her that up to her - she just lost a customer,

I will not cow tow to the vets - when they pay for the horse and can diagnose whats wrong with the poor critter then maybe I will consult with them - until then they can just butt out !

How dare they try and dictate to a horse owner who or who cant look at there animal - when they honestly keep saying - give it another few days and see what develops - and when pressed they say they do not know what is the problem

My physio let the vet know that she was going to treat my horse when I first used her, she didn't expect me to inform them.

Um, this is pretty standard practice isn't it? I asked my physio out to see my oldie, physio says no prob just need vets permission.

It may be a condition of their insurance and it is certainly designed to protect your horse from unqualified 'professionals', I would see it as a good thing. Surely if some random person you get to see your horse causes damage because they are not registered or allowed by the vet this would be worse?

I can understand it being a query but why so incensed?

Because it's the law?! Poor 'back person', following the law and losing custom over it :( Any one who wouldn't follow this code of practice certainly wouldn't be anyone I wanted anywhere near my animals.

If you don't like the way your vet treats, then find a different vet. Most will be happy to recommend good, registered professionals if they have seen the horse before and are confident that it will do good/do no harm.

In this country, only vets can diagnose. There is the potential to do harm in having a 'back person' out to 'treat' a horse with an injury.

Its the mark of a good complimentary therapist that they consult your vet.
It's not difficult you ring the vet say I am having x look at my horse I take it that's fine and if they say no move to an accommodating vet .
It's the law the therapist whatever they are should do this.

This, I think they actually have to if they are a proper chartered physio!

It's illegal for them not to notify vets isn't it?! With our vets it's simply a phone call to tell them, certainly not 'asking permission'!

It is all to do with insurance. The vet has to be informed so that if he thinks that, in his expert opinion, it is anything that will do anything detrimental to the animal he can say. It's not to say that the owner needs to take his advice. The form I use for my work is signed by the owner to say that she has discussed it with the vet, it's not the vet who signs it. Even if the vet hasn't managed to diagnose the problem, under the animal welfare act, only a vet can . diagnose. No alternative practitioner is permitted to dignose and they shouldn't even try or they will be breaking the law.

I would expect the vet to give 'permission'. If there was a problem it would be the vet I had the issue with, not the therapist. Although I'm unclear about the rules about non-invasive therapy. Where is the line drawn between a physiotherapist and someone who uses something like an equissage?

OP find an uninsured, unqualified, fly by night back person to treat your horse, they then won't be duty bound to ask for vets permission.

Look - its my horse I pay the bills - i can have it shot tonight if i want ! - I am bloody incensed my horse has been being treated for mud fever for 4 weeks - after the first 5 days antibiotics I tell them its still not clearing - leave if for a week they say... so i do - mud fever gets worse and worse (horse stabled by the way and doing every thing i have been told to) - call them out again - give me cream.... call them out again - by this time the bulb of the horses heel is pouring with blood he has scabs all over his legs and they say "oh he has got it bad " yes thats why you were here two days ago ! and you gave me some cream that lasted for approx 4 applications to his scabs.... then the horse is almost crippled - call vets out - they say leave him for 24 hours.... then they say get the on call vet out if I am still not happy..... get the on call vet out to crippled horse on sat - I get given a lecutre that she is for emergency call outs only.... and to get own vet out today...... speak to own vet today.... they say leave him till Wed to see what happens.... they dont know what it is and if x who visited on Sat could not find anything serious (horse is in obvious pain and hobling) then we just need to give it time. And I have to ask them for someone else to look at the crippled animal

I just text my vet for permission. No problem! they know me and my horse well enough.

Wouldn't go to any back person that didn't ask for permission! they would be an unqualified cowboy!

Change your vet is you are not happy with the service you are getting. Don't think anyone said you could have your horse shot (if you wanted), though didn't realise that was the question!

Change your vet if they are giving you such bad service...but that is different from the back person question though..

So change vets then. Or have your horse shot, whatever. Or have an unqualified numpty out who couldn't care less, just as long as they make their money.

You can't expect a professional to ignore the legal and ethical guidelines they abide by.

Get a new vet, then your alternative therapist can ask them instead. Whether you like the vets or not let the back lady get permission so she can see your horse before you change vets otherwise you are cutting your nose off to spite your face and YOU are making your horse suffer because you don't like your vet.

Get back lady to get permission, then change your vet, then breathe. Maybe next time be a bit more insistent about the treatment of your horse. I hope you don't get it shot either.

While you can have your horse shot, you can't mistreat or neglect him and according to the Animal Welfare Act only vets can be responsible for the medical treatment of horses. Associated veterinary professionals need to work under a vet's supervision as he ultimately has the final medical say for the animal's veterinary care.

Exactly.

The horse is chronically lame, I asked the back person to come and give the poor animal a massage.... he has been stood in now for almost a week and is struggling to walk on his front leg - although this has no obvious signs of mud fever like the others.

I was being sarcastic about having the horse shot!

She is not an unqualified numpty, she has treated my horses before and is fully qualifed -- I am just insenced that my vets have been totally useless - but yet i have to allow them to make a decison about my horse ie. it can or cant be seen - when they cant even diagnose what wrong with him

Change vets, it's a legal requirement, get over it. Personally I would also be really cross at my vet, but also at myself for letting it get that bad without changing vets or asking for a second opinion.

We weren't saying she was an unqualified numpty, however anyone who doesn't get permission to treat your horse is.

~I have tried for over a week to find out what ELSE is wrong with the horse - 3 vet visits a blacksmith.... If i knew what was wrong I would not be stressing to death over the poor thing, and the fact that the vets dont know is not helping - they dont think its his shoulder, his tendons, his ligaments, nor the mud fever - it could be an abcess.... we dont think its an abcess... he could have pulled himself galloping round the field - erhmmmm he has been on box rest for the last month, and walked out under supervision..... he may have just hurt himself in the stable???? - how many more days can I just leave him on pain killers watching him be brave and struggle on? !

GW I would calm down ring the vets in the morning first thing insist on speaking to the senior partner explain calmly why you are not happy with the treatment of your horse and take it from there but don't take your annoyance out on a person providing you with a service who has worked for you in the past by taking a strop with them because they won't break the law and you are angry with your vet.
It's not fair they are trying to do the right thing.
