Vet prescribed iodine for thrush...

My pony has thrush in her hooves and the vet said a cap of iodine in a couple of inches of water, applied twice a day for a week.

I can only get to the yard once a day, so she is getting it done only once. Started on Monday and today her frogs feel really hard. To be fair, they look loads better, but I am concerned at how hard they are!

Has anyone else experienced this? Is it safe?

Iodine is quite a standard vet remedy for thrush and does seem to work on some horses. If her frogs are hard that's a good thing! Soggy, soft frogs are the breeding grounds of thrush so hard dry frogs are what you want.
 
Yep. Its tried and tested. Google Sugardene, which is basically ordinary sugar mixed to a paste with iodine and applied in all the nooks and crannies -frog and soles using a tooth brush or paint brush.
 
I just did a thing about this the other day! I really want to try it on poppys feet she has soft frogs and soles but is barefoot
 
Her feet have really hardened up. Im impressed!

She is a new pony to me and the rain started the week she arrived, so I've only seen her feet soaked and soggy! They do look much better :O)

After the weeks course, should I use it on occasion to keep it at bay?
 
My gelding has a little bit of thrush and I've used iodine on thrush in the past but ran out, silly question but does it have to be prescribed by a vet? The pony I used it on in the past wasn't mine and is just in my care and came with the iodine wash.
 
I am very interested to read this as I seem to have a long battle against thrust in one of my boys backs. I've tried numerous things and although some 'work' for a while nothing has solved it.

So...Where I can buy idoine from to try this?? Did your vet get you some, or did they tell you where you can buy it from?

Try Milton liquid. 1 part Milton to 10 parts water. Soak weekly or spray every other day. Works a treat. If thrush or infection really bad, get sum clean Trax.
