Lil was feeling slightly tight and tripping on her backend so I asked the vet to check her to rule out anything serious and then assumed I'd get a physio to give her a once over just to loosen off her muscles.

The vet said that there is nothing sinister going on, most likely a tweak from hooning round the field.

What has shocked me is that she wouldn't give consent for any sports massage or physiotherapy to be done. She said that if I wanted further treatment I would have to do a bute trial and then nerve blocks. I don't want to drug the poor lamb and have her poked and prodded for what is probably just a few tight muscles!

Will be changing vets to one that will allow me to go with my judgement rather than trying to fleece the insurance company for drugs my horse doesn't need.

Anyone else experienced this?

Will that be a large vetenary practise nr Lichfield......if so yes I have had problems

I use Anna Hindley from Equilibrum in Burton (Chiropractor), she is very good although away until the 10th I believe.

Lol, bizarrely enough it wasn't! I stopped using them after they misdiagnosed D's lameness, won't ever trust that particular vet again. When I got Lil I swapped to the other vet in Derby and now they're being awkward.

Lichfield lot had always said yes to any physio/chiro so will be registering Lil with them to get a "Yes" and make it all legal.

My kitten nearly died when a certain Uttoxeter vet told me he was "off-colour". Took him to Jamie Winstone's and they admitted him straight away as he was about to give up the fight. That said, I'm quite happy to register with them if they'll give me consent for a physio.

Maybe its me, don't seem to have any luck with vets.

hold on here.
So you have a horse slightly unsound, correct? If your horse is totally sound feel free to correct me.
Vet is refusing treatment I'm guessing because unless it improves with rest it will likely need further vet investigation, as opposed to being stretched and posibly further damaged by a physio....
This is why physios require permission, in order to avoid exacerbating injuries.

She was completely sound when the vet examined her. Did a full lameness work up and no nasties found. That was why I wanted to do it properly and have a vet to check her first before having any treatments done. There had been a slight soreness there but vet was happy to acknowledge that it had worked itself out by the time she saw her.

What I don't see is why a vet would refuse permission on a horse that is now sound and has never been anything more than stiff with a few trips. She's never been unsound in the slightest.

I did the honest thing, most people I know have said that they would have just called the physio/chiro straight away without having a vet to look at the horse.

I thought that having ruled out anything sinister that it would be best to have a good massage all over to take any knots out of her muscles or tension?

Sounds really weird on the part of your vet! If your horse had an on-going problem, I can just about imagine the vet asking you to hold back from calling the physio if they had some other plan of action. However, if the vet has cleared your mare, what is the problem? Mine see the physio regularly and she and the vet also talk to each other if there is a specific problem - I would imagine this is standard practice for most people.

Change vets!

i would phone the vets and ask to speak to the major vet/share holder and ask them why they are refusing consent for a physio /back person to see this horse? and ask then to give their reasons in writing? taking that you are using a fully qualified fully insured professional physio/back person? if you dont have a suitable conversation i would suggest that you add i will be changing my vets as you seem inflexible to alternative treatments! (maybe your vets dont rate your back person?) good luck. and check your saddle!

Possibly, if your physio/chiro is acting responsibility then they should call your vet to check it is ok for them to treat your horse. My physio works with my vet; whenever I call her, she asks if he has had any lameness, is it a routine call or is there a worry about something in particular... and then she calls the vet for permission to treat him.

If your vet has refused to let a physio treat your horse then my guess is that you'll invalidate your insurance (and possibly your physio's professional insurance) by going ahead anyway. I'm sure there is a reason why the vet won't let you get a physio.

Was it for a specific physio or just at all?
does seem odd if horse was sound etc. and all examined. V. weird!

iv had lameness work ups done on my boy in feb as he was irregular and not stepping through properly and the workup came back fine and i advised me to get physio done!

See now that was what I expected! The chiro was out tonight anyway to see my friend's mare so I explained what had happened, she said was very nice about it. Will be waiting until the dust settles and then having her out when they've forgotten what I said about the tightness.
