My mare has been lame in both front feet and was x rayed today. her left pedal bone has caused issues in the past and over the past 2 years has demineralised a wee bit more.

She had wedge shoes with silicon pads on, when the vet took the shoe off lots of muck and dirt that was trapped between the pad and the sole fell out, i've never seethis happen before, has anyone else?

She also has a corn on one foot and the soles of both feet are much thinner than her last x rays.

Vet wanted her kept in to get her hooves to grow and heart bars put on, as she has to stay in for 2/3 months i asked if she could get the shoes off and he said he would.prefer this.

Shes already fed a barefoot diet, i would like suggestions for a supplement for her thoigh if anyone has any?

Having gone back to the yard and had some comments about how her feet might not grow better with no shoes and seen how.sore she is on her wee feet tonight i am feeling really bad and wondering if im going the right road.....can anyone give me hope that i am please?!!!

I recently had a racehorse in to box rest, tendon not foot trouble, he arrived with thin soles, no frogs to speak of and underrun heels, he was put onto fast fibre, magnesium and salt, ad lib haylage the change in his feet was amazing, in just 2 months he grew frogs his soles toughened up and with a trim to his toes his heels started to develop.

You should find your horse can do the same, she will be very sore for a while, taking off the high heels and pads will feel strange but give her time and she should start to feel more comfy. The pro hoof supplement is good as is Farriers Formula both will encourage good growth and strong horn.

Brilliant thanks!! I had to take her off the fast fibre as she didnt like it but she gets fibre nuggets instead. she gets magnesium and ill add salt.

I really really hope shes a bit better tomorrow!

Is she on a deep shavings or other supportive conforming bedding? If not that will be more comfortable for her and throughout the stable.
These pads can be cut to shape (slightly larger than hoof imprint) and taped on with duct tape. http://www.equinepodiatrysupplies.co.uk/Pads/EPS-4-lb-Pads
They squash down and mould to the sole shape very quickly and offer good support and can be used in boots. Cavallos are suitable I believe.
Here's a video showing how to tape them on if needed.

I suggest you contact Forage Plus for what to supplement, they have a range of high spec balancers which will definitely help. http://shop.forageplus.com/epages/es137718.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es137718/Categories

I would ask the vet if you can put her on Danilon for a week just to help her, if she feels more comfortable she will move around which will help in the long run.

She has a deep bed of shavings right to the door and her feet are padded up atm with nappies and duct tape so ill def have a look at the pads - thank you! vet was reluctant to give her danilon but i do have enough to do.me over the weekend and i gave her 2 tonight. thank you for your help x

Oh good. She will be really feeling her feet especially with thin soles but should feel a bit better in a day or two. The main thing is supporting and protecting those thin soles at this stage. She will improve. x

This first fortnight is going to be one of the longest of your life. She will get better though!

I would recommend getting some Pro Hoof supplement for her as well as the extra mag (you get it from progressive earth on ebay - and you always get a sweetie for you in the bag ;) ).

Hi,
I just thought I would let you know that I am in a very similar position to you. My horse has a reverse pedal bone and damage to his impar ligament. I went down the remidal shoe route and he didn't improve. Anyway we have been barefoot for 4 weeks now and my boy is doing really well, pads and boots are definitely the way forward for the first few weeks - *and he is gradually doing more and more with out his boots. I have gone from having a horse that was 6/10 lame and on box rest for 6 weeks and *on 4 bute a day to a horse that is enjoying turnout and walks out and he is on no bute and he is almost sound. Its still early days for us but I am so pleased with his progress to date

Good luck

Thank you! So good to hear some good stories. was really surprised when the vet said the shoes could come off (he said to.put different shoes on and it was when i asked about barefoot that he agreed it would be better) so everythings crossed. not sure where id get boots for her dinners plates but ill look at them :-)

Vet wanted her kept in to get her hooves to grow and heart bars put on,

Its positive the vet has supported barefoot as an option to remedial shoeing - however the above statement is worrying .

Hooves grow in accordance to diet and stimulation. A horse stood in a box will not grow much hoof as its not needed, nor will it toughen the sole or develop heel bulbs etc.

Why is she standing in a box?

Id stay with pads for now as you may well find her hooves change shape enormously barefoot so boots may need to be changed as they change.

Tigertail.maybe ive worded it wrong. basically he does not want her in the field as he does not think the very wet ground will.encourage hoof growth, she can however be walked out in hand...but is very sore and feet are padded up so i will need to.play it by ear for he first few days and see how.her feet feel.

The reason he didnt want her out in the heart bars aas also because the kind of shoe he thinks she needs is v long at the back.and will come off v easily.

When she is up to leaving the box for a short time do use those pads rather than just nappies. They will give much more support and protection. With very thin soles there is a risk of abscess without good protection. I'm sure you know this. :o x Best wishes coming your way.

Much better than i thought! She is much less tentative and pottery and seems to find walking much easier. she marched across the stable to get her haynet and is much brighter than yesterday.. still spending a lot of time standing on the shavings at the back and pointing her feet but definitely less than yesterday. will give her a bute tonight and tomorrow still. im really pleased :-) thanks for asking
