Im thinking about taking my 23 year old part Arab x section b showing in a veteran class. I normally ride her in a snaffle but also have a rugby Pelham for her too- which would be best for the showing ring and which way round do the plaited and straight reins go? And what will the judge be looking for? My mare does a lovely extended trot that I thought would look nice across the long diagonal in a routine. Please help!!!!

Don't forget, with a rugby pelham, you will need a bridoon slip as if you were using a normal double bridle. Plaited reins go on top.
Good luck, I show mine in veteran classes, he's 20. Judges should be looking for a well mannered walk, trot and canter, they shouldn't ask for extension.

Thankyou that's great advice. But just one quick q, what bit do you use? The pelham has a bridoon but because she's quite fine it makes her look asif there's too much metal in her mouth- can you suggest any other bit that is abit stronger then a snaffle.

You should be fine in a normal pelham with 2 reins, this was what I used when we (successfully) competed at affiliated level.

Don't be afraid to show extended trot or canter if your horse can do it :-)
