I asked on here the other day re clipping my horse for veteran classes, mainly in hand. Someone advised I should also clip his legs which I have done, but he is covered in scars!! His coat should have grown abit by the middle of March, hiding a few, but just how fussy are the veteran judges? Surely they would expect the horse to have picked up a few bumps and lumps along the way!

I have found most judges except that veterans have a certain amount of lumps and bumps and will look beyond this aslong as they aren't horrendus etc.

I have a hunter and he has scars on both flanks and won 22 championships last year so I would not worry about them to much!! We have shown veterans and my friend still does I think they look at them as a bit of a life story its not like looking at a 6yo with scars!! But if you want to try and cover them you can get make up for them from supreme showing products you can mix and match to get the right colour!! Works wonders my friends mare fell on her knees the starting of last year and the makeup took the look of them!! Good luck hope you have a good season!! X

If you are doing affiliated veteran classes ie VHS then they are ignored as are other blemishes such as splints - if you checkout the VHS showing website you will see exactly what you will be judged on

I did not compete last year but I am fairly certain you should not be using makeup in a VHS veteran class - the rules will tell you - most people will enhance appearance though!

Good luck

ETA have you got a cob and this is why you have clipped?

depends on what breed you have like M&M you dont clip how ever old they need to be oh natural

veterans will have some wear and tear just like a car. Tho not all , just as some younger will.

the important thing is too:

turn you and yourself out well for the class.
how much the horse is fit
tack or showing bridle clean and smart
horse trimmed where ness.
individual show or trot up for judge good and practiced if you can

A judge will take all this in to consideration.

The tough is when your horse is say 26 a few scars and you up against 30 without

 I rocked up at a veteran class in oct, and the hairy little pony had sweated up in the box - not much I could do with that apart from walk him round and try and brush him, hard to straighten curly hair though  It was only a small class, but we won, and were then in hand reserve champion (again, small local comp though!) and she said they didn't expect veterans to look the same as others showing necessarily, and had to judge differently to look past the stuff on the surface almost.

I would also look at getting a physio/chiro out to make sure they are feeling in tip top form - the judge really noticed how supple mine was, despite him not being seen for a few years by the back man. I will be booking him in this year though in prep for more serious comps ;)

Thank you all for your great advice. He is a 17.1 han x tb. The reason I full clipped him is because he looks much smarter then when he has lines from his other clip. Also he is quite a sensitive lad and seems to prefer it not to moult!! He is coming up 16 so will probably be one of the younger horses in the class!! He has his back and saddle checked on a regular basis so all should be fine in that department!! I think we will just test the water at a few shows, but at the end of the day I compete for fun so as long as we don't totally disgrace ourselves I will be happy!!

You didn't say what type of veteran classes you would be doing.

In any event you will be fine in March with a clip you just need to trim correctly during the summer and ensure your turnout is 110% correct - especially if you have got through to a VHS area final.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions I have done a fair bit of VHS showing with my super old boy who (any excuse to brag about him :D) has won at area final level and been a reserve for Olympia.

Do not be fooled into thinking anything goes at area final level - its as tough as getting to HOYS

Good luck
