I have a 20 year old ID x TB (ex International Grand Prix show jumper) who I've been bringing back into work over the last 18 months. He's fit and well so I thought I'd have some fun over the summer (what summer ?) doing the odd local riding club shows. Now, he's not a show horse and his jumping days are over (although he loves the odd 'pop' here and there) so I thought I'd do some in hand and ridden veteran classes.
However, never having done a ridden veteran class, I'm not sure what is expected. Plus, my tack is not matching - brown bridle, black saddle - do you think that would matter.

I could also do some senior (thats me as well as him) equitation classes, but again, never done them, so don't know what the form is.

Any help appreciated.

Hey I do pre-vets with my girly and have found they tend to be a little softer on the oldies, so i imagine for a local show you could get away with non matching tack.

Turnout is the same as for other classes, so clean tack, well groomed horse, plaits dependent on breed etc.

Showing wise you will be expected to W, T and C on both reins and then do an individual show. More often than not galloping is not allowed in these classes.

Hope this helps

I did a veteran class a couple of yers ago when mine was 25. We had just done a showjumping class so he was all wound up, the judge was rather snotty (I had black bridle and brown saddle) and placed me last, lol. Ok, so he's not the best at standing still but all the others in the class were under 20 and looked like they didnt have an ounce of life in them, while mine was bounding around! The previous year a different judge really liked him and didnt seem bothered by unmatching tack.

Eeek, I don't fancy galloping - he's 17.1 and big. probably bog off with me - ha ha.

OK, so I won't worry about the tack not matching, after all its the horse they are judging. But of course will be all clean and tidy.

What should I do in the individual show ?
Also, what do you have to do in equitation classes ?

I am quite looking forward to it. The old chaps loves a day out - he thinks the glory days are back and everyone MUST be looking at HIM, bless him.
