Ive been asking around for a while now but had no interest in my veteran mare.

She is 27, can be lightly hacked starting march due to tendon injury but loves fuss and a good groom.
She is 10000% bombproof including some idiot setting off a firework in their front garden when we were riding past!

So does anyone actually want to loan a veteran or are people worried about their age etc?

Mince pies and mulled wine for any answers :D

Guess nobody wants to keep her though winter while she has a tendon injury, you may have more luck once she is fully fit and yes her age will put a lot of people off.

Perhaps keep her and look for a sharer to hack her once her tendon is OK.

My first loan pony was a 27 year old connie, he was fit and well and raring to go though. loved him to bits and would have kept him for ever given the chance

Her age would put me off personally, although I used to ride a 35yo crazy chestnut mare and ridden many ponies in their late twenties but I'd be very wary taking on the responsibility of a veteran. She sounds lovely but I'm guessing age is putting people off! Good luck though :)

Honestly your best het, find a horse mad kid.

When I was 12 I'd be up at the yard all day, any minute I could. Reason? A 32 year old pony called cream, loved him to bits would quite happily just groom him and fuss around. 100% bombproof.

Yes I didn't pay any money, but I'd frequently be there before the owner so he was always brought in and munching on hay happy as Larry, I always helped out, and if she went away I'd look after him.

If money isn't the issue see if you cab find a horse mad kid, who'll give her all the love she needs.

I appreciate times have changed though :/

There could be someone out there thats wants a safe steady horse for gentle riding.

But regardless of age they wont want an injured horse.
So i dont think you will find someone untill you horse is rideable again.

Hi,

As Op's have said I don't think your horses age is putting off loaners but more the injury. Loaners would wish to ride rather than pamper. Besides it's not really the time of year people are looking for loans.

Get her back into work and try again in the spring and i'm sure you'll have your hand bitten off by either a youngster or an oldee.

Personally I've ridden horses with more life in their late twentys than my boy has in his teens .

If the horse were a weight carrier i would be interested, even allowing for the injury recovery time, but i already have my perfect horse on loan and im quite far away from you. If i am, other people may be too. Good luck!

My friend would like one of these under 12hh for her little girl so you could get lucky. You probably just need to be exceptionally picky and not pin your hopes on her going.

I have a horse on loan, would not have even considered one with a current injury. The main reason being 1) the cost to keep. 2) the possibility of things going wrong with injury, needing further treatment etc.

Tendon injuries don't always heal in the allotted time frame, some often need surgery. I don't think anyone would consider it unless you paid all bet treatment and supplements for that leg, and then most won't consider it when they would have to pay for her for 3/4 months - a quarter/third of a year before she is rideable, possibly longer.

I loaned a veteran, however He is 18, personally I would have been doubtfully of loaning a 27yo as I want to progress and learn and most not all horses are slowing down or retired/retiring and are not able to school as much or go to low level shows etc.

Personally I think you will have to keep hold of her until atleast a point until she is fully recovered. People will be more interested then as winter will be disappearing.

I have an oldie and he went for loan early this year and he has come back and is full of life and cheeky as gets out.

Its probably the injury as I had lots of replies to my for loan adverts when I brought him back home.

I would rehab her then have her going and readvertise, mentioning her previous injury but that she is sound and in work :)

She would only be on part loan, and I wouldn't want any money for her, I just want some one to help care for her/ride her etc.
She is 14.3/15h and an old style welsh cob with a bit of clydie in her so i would describe her as a weight carrier :) heres a picture of her:

I think she's gorgeous although I am a little biased! :D

Oh she is lovely! COuld you go for part loan instead? Maybe advertise for someone to come down once or twice a week now and just fuss her maybe walk her out in hand and get to know her, no money involved. Then when they bring her back into work to part loan or full loan her.

Weather is that bad you cant really do much riding at the moment anyway

Hard for someone to commit to a horse that they can't even try out for 3 months. I think you'll be lucky to find someone before she is rideable.

She is gorgeous.

I'd bite your arm off for her - even with no riding (very fairweather rider here) but you're in the wrong area for me.

To be honest its a nightmare trying to loan anything these days, times have changes i think. A few years ago my phone would have been ringing off the hook for the mare i had advertised & now you are lucky if you get an email let alone a call. Ive had mine advertised for the best part of year with no joy at all, her only downside being she is green, but i was happy for a long term loan/or view to buy.

Where are all you guys in my area? Your mare us gorgeous and Id quite happily have her to fuss over even without riding. But I like my golden oldies and haven't had horse contact for a while :(

my mare is 27, fit as a fiddle, no injuries or anything but I wouldn't want to loan another horse of her age as I do tend to worry about her and how much longer she will live for! maybe if you offered her as a part loan, so someone wasn't responsible for full vet fees etc then you might have more luck!

I wouldn't want anyone else riding my old lady though! but then again she's not anywhere near bomb proof! she is more like 100% likely to bomb haha

good luck finding someone!

She is gorgeous. Why do you want to pass responsibility on at her age? Face your responsibility and see her to her end. Loaning is fraught with uncertainties and I would personally not loan her to a junior.

I'm in east manchester near Ashton-under-Lyne / Stalybridge.

I'm going to put up adverts in my local tack shops etc and see if i have any interest. I'm only loaning her as I bought her almost 3 years ago and a family friend who has had horses for over 30 yrs was going to look after her whilst I went to uni (i'd be back every other weekend and holidays) and then i'd have her back when i finish.
HOWEVER, she then decided to get a youngster and move yards and now says she doesnt want to have mine any more as 3 is too many :( So i'm gutted so need to find a loaner before september

Please don't shoot me down for this as it is not my fault :( I'm heartbroken to have to put her on part loan but it is the only way I can keep her x
