sorry 2nd thread of the day! but what age would you start giving your horse/pony veteren feeds? pony is currently 15 so not sure on age ect. also could someone recommend me some cheap and cheerfull supplements for joints ect?!

My 20 year old cob is on Equine America Glucosamine 10,000 plus joint supplement. He has been having this for the last 4 years and has no stiffness whatsoever. Whether that is because of the supplement or just coincidence I don't know, but at 18 pounds a tub, which lasts 2 months, im happy to keep him on it.

I don't feed him veteran feeds as he is a good doer and only gets a low calorie balancer.

I've gotten better results with a conditioning mix than a veteran feed.
I've just changed from superflex to SNP joint supplement because at nearly £70 a tub superflex is getting a bit expensive and I've got two horses on it. the SNP equivalent is around £36

My 24yr old doesn't get anything but forage & a token gesture of hifi lite (habit from when she was in hard work & got fed). I don't think there's an age though for feeding as such, its very individual. I also find veteran mixes are usually heating & have the same effect as comp mix.

There is no fixed age to switch your horse to senior feed. Actually senior feed is all about marketing, you should be looking at whats in the feed and would your horse be better off on it or on something else. Senior feeds are generally higher on fiber and have less protein, and can be supplemented with vitamin E, glucosamine,... but it all depends on the brand.

Which feed were you considering?

I feed my 20 year old 1 scoop of D&H Build Up Mix, 1 1/2 scoops of Alfa-A Oil and 1 tablespoon of Vegetable oil in the winter. In summer he gets (not that he really needs it!) a handful of D&H build up mix a handful of Mollichop and some electrolytes

This is him for reference :)

My 18yr old stressy Arab x is on bailey no 4, sugar beet, flax oil and sunflower seeds!!! So similar to Jeeny connor. The flax oil is slightly higher in omega 6 thatn veg oil so coundters the omega 3 in the sunflowers.

Come summer will just be Doctor green!

I've had my 30+ year old cob on Spillers Senior Conditoning Mix and Alfa-A Oil for a couple of years now after he lost some weight and he seemed to be doing OK. Then recently my 25 year old Welsh x New Forest dropped a load of weight over the winter and I put him on the same diet - nothing has happened, so I'm starting to wonder whether there is something in what has been said about so called 'veteran' feeds. Welshie just got bolshie and over excited - no weight gain - spoke to the nutritionist at Allen and Page and she recommended Calm and Condition with the Alfa-A for them both - no mention of the veteran mix that they produce. Am still converting to the new mix, so will have to see whether it is any good or not.

My 22yr old was on veteran vitality but went off it early this year, was a good feed did the job without making him mental.

He's now pretty much on fibre and oil and good hay :) and is looking great considering he lost a fair whack when I moved him and after he was ill.

He was on popped on VV as it met his needs not because it is a veteran food. He also gets a home recipe mixture for his joints of various things to keep him mobile and is fairly sprightly :)

If you want to put him on a veteran feed then do so its your horse :)
