The horse i've just brought has just turned 18 & i've been looking at various insurance companies for her. Petplan seemed to be the best for veterans, but i've found 's website today and it seems to be better. This is what the site says about veterans:

Veteran Horse Insurance Option 1. "For horses aged 17-19 years inclusive".
This option provides the same limits of cover as our standard horse policy and can include veterinary fees up to £5,000 per incident for illness and disease as well as accidents and injuries.
A 2 stage veterinary certificate performed within 30days of inception will be required.

Now, i haven't seen any other companies (other than petplan) that cover veterans for illness/disease, only external injury, so i'm a bit wary about it.

Has anone had experiences with insuring veterans? Which companies are best & are Equestrian Direct any good? As you can probably tell, insurance has never really been my area before. Someone else has aways sorted it for me!

Can I ask which company you have quoted from as there are a number that may or may not be as *erm*...professional shall we say, as Pet Plan.

Beware cheap.

Im with petplan, if you get their standard cover they will start a new policy including ilness before they are 20 they will then cover yopur horse for illness untill they are 25 and just accident there after.
Also if you phone them and check, i didnt have to supply a vetting cert at all, i think it goes on the value of the horse though. So ive insured mine for just under the value where you have to start getting vettings even though he is worth more.
Be warned though the only bad thing about pet plan is that they will put exclusions onfor very minor things.

there are a few companies i wouldnt touch with a barge pole.
