Just wondered what people's opinions are on this?

My mare is 19, has a touch of arthritis now in both forelimbs but this is managed, I've never had her insured before (and therefore no claims) but I am concious now she is getting older she is more likely to have problems.

I know most insurers will only cover for accidental injury at her age, however KBIS appear to offer their 'leisure horse' cover, which does offer £3,000 of cover for injury plus disease and illness. It doesn't seem to be much more than then others but I want to know what the catch is?! I wondered if anyone has any experience with them? Are they bad for paying out etc? I called them to try and discuss but they weren't the most helpful!

Thanks!😊

At a guess there will be several "catches" firstly they may, as you are newly insuring a horse you have owned some time, need a 2 stage vetting done, this seems to be common when taking out new insurance and you cannot blame the company for being a bit cautious, second is that there will possibly exclusions which you may not be aware of until you have taken out the cover, you do have a cooling off period so read the fine print when you get it, finally things such as the arthritis will not be covered as it is pre-existing and they may exclude the whole of the legs that are already showing signs, so you could find she damages a ligament in a front leg and they will not pay out.

If they were unhelpful on the phone it may well be that they don't want to answer the questions above as you are not going to use them once you hear what will be covered, I have no experience with the company but they are in business to make money so taking on a high risk older horse is not great business sense for the same reasons that you are now looking to get her insured.
