On the way back from RVC yesterday, I thought I had better check the insurance to cover the colic bill. I have been with SEIB for years as it at least 2002 or before., recently I checked my horsebox and found they were £ 100 more than the rest, then checked my 4x4 and found the insurance was £54 a month, so found AA was £ 14 per month. Now the last policy my mare L, was £ 35 per month, so checked if colic was covered and they said no as when she got a bout of laminitis in 2001 they moved aged 11 to veteran and that wasn't covered since it was a pre existing condition. I said Jeeze it happened today for the first time, she is still at RVC. Since when has laminitis justified moving a horse from basic to veteran and cause colic surgery not to be covered.

Serious thinking of changing or canceling. Are there any good veteran insurance companies which cover for this.

Veteran policies are typically limited in scope (and hence cheaper) - £35 a month is pretty cheap these days sadly.

They should have asked you before moving. You could argue that you didn't know - but presumably it's been in the paper work for the last 20 renewals ?

I know people with veteran horses how are refusing to move to veteran policies and as they have been with same insurance co for years - they are OK with that.

But finding a new veteran policy to cover colic how she's had it - I think will be almost impossible. Sorry

It is the insurance companies job to pay out less than they get in - otherwise the go bust. so they avoid what they can.

I changed mine to Petplan veteran. Very few will cover anything other than external injuries, but theirs was the best and cheapest.
