Hi
My horse is coming up for 17 next year, i am thinking about putting her on a 16+ mix, does anyone else feed their horses this? She isn't underwieght and never drops off in winter time!
Thanks

My horse is turning 16. I rang the feedlines and asked when I should put him on a veteran feed, and they told me not to until he started to drop weight or had trouble eating (which would make him loose weight I suppose). So if you are not having that problem they would probably tell you not to.

My pony started on veteran conditioning mix last year - he was 40! the first time in 26 years I've had to feed him when not working. He's doing well on it now though and I've had to cut his feed down again now

i started feeding my 17 yr old a veteran mix this year as she doesnt seem to be holding weight, she has always been a good doer and lammi prone too, its quite suprising, but she needs it, i feed dodson and horrell 16plus

If your horse is holding its weight well then there is no need to switch to a veteran mix. In fact, I know of several good-doers who have developed laminitis for the first time ever, because owners switched them onto veteran mix despite the fact that the horses were already in good condition. Most veteran mixes are high in cereals and, therefore, starch which can be one of the triggers for laminitis.

My 19yr old is on D & H 16+ and has been since the spring...when she dropped weight for the first time ever, after a nasty virus.
She's TB and a good doer generally, and doesn't look as old as she is (so everyone including vets, tell me)...but I just wanted to make sure she had enough protein to replace wear and tear....
I feed her three handfuls twice daily...and she gets Speedibeet and looks fine on that.

I took my mare off this food about 2 years ago as I noticed it was getting stickier and stickier - I assume with the amount of molasses being pt in it which not good for her teeth.
