OK, I know the "rules" state that scars are not taken into account, but are they?? My lad is now 16yo and I want to start doing some VHS classes this year, but he has a huge scar on his hock. Are the judges still going to look unfavourably on this, even though it was accident related and he has never had a lame step in his life? I just wondered if judges really do judge the horse or whether scars have an impact even though they shouldn't?? Anyone had any experiences?

Mine has no scars so I can't give an answer from experience - but I have seen horses that are fully clipped and I have shown myself with heart bar shoes on. All of these should be ingnored and from what I have seen with an "a" panel judge they have been.

Remember that marks in VHS showing are awarded for different things than "normal" showing - and my interpretation of condition is weight, coat, etc not whether or not there are scars

Hope that helps a bit

I showed my veteran with various lumps & bumps gathered after an active 20+ year career. She won several VHS classes & loved it

She had splints, windgalls & a couple of scars, but because she moved freely, could extend & collect & would do both simple & flying changes at 22 she was marked very highly.

Anything other than walk trot and canter is ignored in VHS showing so its a waste of time doing flying changes - posibility of being marked down as well I would think as the rules clearly state what is and is not allowed in your show

NOOO not at all, only their paces are taken into account ie the walk trot and canter. my mare has scars on her legs a HUGE one on her front fetlock and also a uge hlump on her knee. and also splints lol. and i still managed to beat ones with clean legs :P tehe

you just have to walk trot and canter on both reins. no need for flying changes etc and no extending or galloping needed.

My TB is perfect - hasn't got one mark on him anywhere and has a beautiful shiny coat and looks wonderful (Modest aren't I lol)

However - we came 6th last year in a local show because he is now getting stiff which the judge commented on. I think she only gave me 6th place to be nice and because she thought my boy was sweet!

So its definately paces that count!

i show in the VHS classes, mine has a scar, I dont think it is taken into account. I've done area and regional classes and TBH from what I have observed it is down to schooling/balanced paces and how the horse moves, mainly. I.E the ones placed at the regional class I was in looked to be very well schooled, county level type horses.

No, but they do mark on conformation. I have been going with my friend for a few years now and there are a lot of HOYS ponies doing the classes, that are obviously winning.
