Veteran showing

I’ve planned a couple of showing shows for my ex event horse this summer. He strained his check ligament last year and at 23 years old I felt it was time for him to hang up his studs but he still loves a party so we’ve turned to the dark side of showing and some dressage.

I am a total showing novice so wondered if anyone can shed some light on veteran classes both ridden and in hand.

We did a couple of ridden last year and I put him in a Pelham with two reins (he is 17hh and a sports horse with lots of TB - a riding horse type I think) but he hates it. He does go in it but he feels much happier in his snaffle - will I get marked down for this?

Also, he is a floaty big mover and has a killer extended trot. If I throw this in our individual show will it go in our favour or the opposite?

Any other tips and tricks would be great!

You can get pelhams with a snaffle mouthpiece loads of different types so you could find one that is very similar to the one you use add give that a try.

You certainly could add in some lengthened strides of trot into your individual show.

At what level shows are you thinking of doing local or county/affiliated?

Hi I show both VHS and SSADL classes. VHS is no extensions. The societies have quite different rules so definitely give them a close read if showing under them. I used a Pelham with as close a mouthpiece to his snaffle I can find. Good luck. It’s very friendly showing veterans.

You can not extend (gallop) in any Veteran class. SSADL now have set shows. VHS is a less restrictive. No harm in showing a small extended trot when changing the rein.

As to bits. Would he go in a double? Ridden off of the snaffle? Many don't like pelhams because no matter what you do you have some poll action. A double will allow you to ride solely off of the snaff with your curb rein loose and ineffective.
