I'm not a huge fan of supplements, ie I only use them if necessary.

Our 23 year old shettie is starting to show his age, and is becoming a little stiff on his back end. He's not in pain, and is happy enough to work..

He'll be in almost full work (for a pony lol) in the coming autumn and winter doing a bit of everything, so i'd like to add a little something to his daily feed (plain bog standard pony nuts).

Can anyone recommend anything inexpensive, no frills, and that won't make him gain weight or fizz him up too much?

no-bute.. devils claw, glucosamine, cod-liver oil, msm.. all claim to help.

Lou x..

Sounds like no-bute or devils claw would be ideal as it will get rid of any inflamation.

What about getting a bag of Veteran Maintanence mix?
It has all the vits and mins etc and has the stuff in for joints etc, so im sure a handful of that instead of his pony nuts would work well. I feed it to my 28yo tb and i chkd with the Spiller rep etc and they confirmed no need for extra sups, so it works out cheaper, and a bag would last your chap ages!!
Just make sure you buy the Veteran Maintenance mix and NOT the Veteran Conditioning mix otherwise you will have a little fatty

I have to buy the nuts anyway (spillers Low cal) because he has them in his snack ball. So I'd rather buy a supplement and just add it to a handful of nuts, than buy a separate feed.

He has a multivitamin in the winter anyway (as I soak his hay and he doesnt have lots of turnout).

Do i use just normal cod liver oil? or does it have to be equestrian stuff?
