Just after some thoughts really...

My horse is a toad on the lunge, will use any opportunity to pull away from the handler, giving you two hind feet in the process. Also has a melt down if attempting to lunge over a small jump, or series of trotting poles. Will also do her utmost to avoid going ovet a single pole lunging, ie will go around the side. I don’t lunge much, But when I do, it is on smaller circle, and mostly walk trot, for about five minutes (Current don’t have a lunge like so use a very long lead rope.)

however when horse is ridden, will be perfectly happy going in a similar sized circle, over trot poles, and over jumps.

Well maybe it is awkward and uncomfortable on a short rope, trying to circle. So use a lunge line, in an enclosed area and be very careful not to get behind where you could get seriously kicked. Do a bit of reading up on how to lunge so you understand the principles.

Set yourself and your horse up to suceed not fail, stop lunging with a lead rope, its way too short, get a lunge line if you insist on lunging and perhaps invest in a lesson on lunging, so that you are sure you are being effective.
