My vet has offered me this joint supplement. I'm trying to find out if theres anything comparable on the market (knowing that vets prices are usually way above what can be found online). The price of this is £84 for 850g, so 113 days after the initial loading cost, so £0.75 per day (if I've worked that out correctly!)

Composition per 15g:

Chondroitin Sulphate 2000mg

Glucosamine HCL 99% pure 6500mg

Methysulphonylmethane 3300mg

Hyaluronic Acid 100mg

Additives per 15g:

Boswellia Serrata 3100mg

Analytical Constituents:

Crude Protein 23.5%

Crude oil 9.9%

Crude fibre <0.1%

Crude ash 3.55%

Sodium 1.01%

Instructions for use:

1 scoop = 15g

For the first two weeks:

Ponies up to 300kg 1 scoop daily.

Horses up to and over 500kg 2 scoops daily.

Maintance dose:
Ponies up to 300kg half a scoop daily.
Horses up to and over 500kg 1 scoop daily.

The above link gives you Feedmarks list of whats in the the common joint supplements.

I would agree your calculations for a Pony on maintenance dose. Assuming vets don't add VAT to the price. Looking at the make up of this joint supplement it's the chronditin thats the expensive element - the others can all be bought separately relatively cheaply. After much research I'm currently feeding GBM (Glucosamine, Boswellia and MSM) from Progressive earth - but this doesn't have the Chronditin

Thankyou. So you are buying them as separates? I think that may end up being too much volume of powder for my pony as she only has a small feed.

No they're a premixed supplement - sorry misled you by quoting wrong company should have said Natural Horse Supplies . They just tell you whats in the mix -but they don't do Chronditin anyway

One tip, when comparing check the dosage. Some have a loading dose and maintenance dose. For Glucosamine, MSM and Chondroiten you are looking for 10:10:4 mg for a big horse though some vary with lower MSM.

Your vets one, I would be feeding between maintenance and loading to get the levels I wanted.

I've found Aviform and Feedmark to be fairly good value. Red horse do quite a good one too. Progressive Earth sell all the individual ingredients if you wanted to mix your own, it wouldn't be any more powder in volume but it is a faff.

What I find with commercial ones as opposed to vets is that there is more likelihood of special offers if you shop around.

Hi my friend uses Hack Up bespoke supplements, she sent them the ingrediants of the Vet supplement and they did the same for almost half the cost. They do their own joint etc supplements. May be worth a look x

Not sure you did work it out correctly (unless you've got a pony). Maintenance at 1 scoop 15g per day = 56 days.

The Red Horse one is quite similar in specs (Msm, Chondroitin, Glucosamine, HA and Boswellia). However they recommend 25g instead of 15g giving you slightly higher levels. That would last 40 days at the higher rate or 66.66 days at the lower and is £45 for a Kg. If you fed at a lower rate it would be the same as your vet one.

Feedmark Bestflex is similar and looks expensive at £71.99 for a kg which they say would last 30 days but has much higher levels than your vets with more than double the amount of some ingredients and Feedmark always have offers if you sign up giving you 40% or buy one get one free.
Their extraflex is much cheaper but doesn't have Boswellia.

The Aviform range doesn't include Boswellia in their Suppleaze Gold though it's good spec and good value and their premium products go for Collagen as the extra ingredient.

Yes it’s a pony.?

The other thing you might need to consider is palatability. The Feedmark one has a very spec but I know of quite a few horses who wouldn't eat it. My vet also supplies the one your vet has offered you and it seems to be more readily accepted. I think all the joint supplements are quite expensive though.
