Vetrofen...what do we think?

The Friesians been off now for 6 months on field rest after damaging his knee. He's looking and moving a lot better, and the vet seems very pleased with him. However, as a consequence of all his 'knee' shenanigans, he's going to have a very arthritic knee from now on, so I'm thinking ahead to the right product(s) I can give him when he starts work again. He's on the usual joint supplements, and seems to be doing well, but I'm wondering about something I could give him for extra pain relief that he might need other than Danilon. I've heard good things about Vetrofen....Has anyone else used this for arthritic joints?
 
I haven't used it myself but a friend uses it and thinks it's the best on the market, much better than cortaflex apparently. She uses it on her 20yo hunter who I'm pretty sure has arthritis, he hacks for miles though and looks great, or he did when I couldn't catch him when I was doing her horses the other day!

I'm also thinking of giving it to my younger horse who has chondromalacia when he comes back into work next year after surgery.

I'm not sure what chondromalachia is, please enlighten me. I hope your horse makes a good recovery. I'm hearing some quite positive things about Vetrofen - it might be just the thing we need!
 
I used Vetrofen in conjunction with Vetroflex after my old horse developed Cushings and could no longer have the steroid injections which had kept his dodgy right hind mobile.

It took a few months but the results were very good - he was able to ping his way through little grids and was generally much more fluid in general.

It's a bit like OCD and the treatment is the same, basically it's the softening of cartilage and he has it in both stifles caused by the bone being flatter than it should be, which he was born with. But hopefully now he's fully grown he won't have any future problems and he had an arthroscopy last week, so he's just started 6 weeks of box rest and then he will have 6 months of paddock rest in an attempt to get the 3mm hole he has in one stifle to heal.

The vet who did the operation said that he will most definitely have some arthritic change as he gets older (he's 8 now but low mileage having only been backed 2 years ago and not doing an awful lot) so I'll probably use the vetrofen then, or when he comes back into work will just see how he goes, it's a bit of a waiting game now!
