So vet came to see my old boy today. We had a long chat and he agreed that he is poor but still very comfortable and happy. He thinks it is the cushings and we agreed on a months pergolide trial. We will reassess in a month (unless he deteriorates) and if he is looking better we will continue for the summer, he can go up on the top fields where there is decent grass as the pergolide should help to keep the laminitis at bay and we will set a date to pts in the Autumn. So hopefully a few weeks or maybe months of quality of life ahead.

We both agreed he will not go through another winter but having been nudged round the stable, the vet thought he wasnt really ready to go just yet, so worth trying to give him the summer.:)

I only saw your other post this morning. Am glad vet has been, and by the sounds of it made you feel a lot happier. I think your horse is very lucky to have you as his owner.

Sounds like the right thing to me. sounds as though your boy has had a lovely life with you and a nice end retaining his dignity is the best way to go.

Thanks. I am by no means the perfect mum! I cut their manes with scissors and they never have a bath LOL! Unless they have unwanted friends of course.

I am actually ok about this decision. What I didnt want was to drag things on with pergolide until he was suffering. My vet and I both feel if I took him into winter he would then begin to suffer even though he may survive.

It wont be easy but it is for the best.
