Vets Get Scanning

It also stated in a DW article that they do not necessarily contact the owner  if it is different to the one presenting the dog! Sorry, I will remain loyal to tattooing forever,at least I KNOW that Gill will phone me if one of my home bred puppies goes AWOL,if the listed owner cannot be found. THAT is why we tattoo.
Even if they make chipping a legal requirement mine will be tattooed to my ownership forever, while the dreaded chip will be the new owners ID.

I've known about this problem for a while, my friend had her dog stolen 5 years ago, she was heartbroken as well as angry that not many vets, dog wardens etc bothered to scan dogs, she has just got her dog back as the new owner had died and their partner had taken the dog to her own vet for a minor problem.Thankfully that vet did scan but the other vets who hadn't scanned it are now getting both barrels from my friend for not scanning.
She could have got the dog back a long time ago.
I have also heard of a man who'd lost his staffie which was a much loved member of their family who his 2 children loved very much. He phoned local dog warden EVERY day asking if they had him, only to be told no, he's not here. Later it turns out dog was at the pound, had been rehomed and no one will tell him where the dog is and who has him despite still being the legal owner of a micro chipped dog.
His children are heart broken.
I have signed the petition, micro chip companies also need to pull their socks up and NOT change ownership details of dogs unless it is firmly established that the dog isn't registered as missing or stolen by currently named owner.

I agree with you EK about the fact tattoos always come back to the breeder, but I suspect even fewer vets check tattoos.:( Asked the question of my daughter re chipping, at the practice she is at all new dogs who come in for vaccination are checked for chips, but otherwise not. I haven't done yet but will sign the petition, I think its a very good idea.

We had a lady that bought a cat in for check up, asked if was chipped she said no and on scanning had 2 Microchips!!! One was registered to someone but all details incorrect and the second not registered at all.

We often have strays in where all details are incorrect then there is no choice but to send to dog warden etc. Tattoo's sound like a good idea, we dont have a lot of patients with tattoos, wouldnt even know where they could get it done?

If we discovered an animal with an id chip we would always chase it up. But i have heard that a microchip doesnt make you the LEGAL owner of the animal. Seems pointless having them if vets/rescues dont actually have to call when they are presented with your pet.

The id chip company we use will only change ownership details on id chip after sending a letter to previous owners to confirm change of ownership and they give 21 days to respond.

I signed this when my boy went missing/stolen 2 years ago. Sadly I don't think people who would nick a muzzled dog would bother with a vet but I always live in hope that his chip will bring him home.

I'm sure I read somewhere that vets who don't scan are worried it will put people off using them. Not sure if this is from business or animal welfare grounds.
