I don't think you'd get many practices wanting to perform a pre-purchase exam in an evening or a weekend - nowhere I've ever worked has offered that... because 1) it messes up the out of hours cover for emergencies, 2) you run out of daylight at certain times of year and 3) I'd kind of like to go home and finish work at some point!

Yes I can't say I've ever heard of a vet working evenings or weekends either, not sure you'll find one to be honest

I appreciate that people would like to get home, however by evening they wouldn’t start an exam at 3.30 to allow the rider to get home at 4.30 to ride for that part.
I also offered to pay a premium with them going after 5pm to compensate for their time.

Think I’m going to have to take a day off work to head over and ride for them, just makes it awkward if the horse fails!

I normally take a day off or a half day for a vetting… as others have said vets don’t do routine appointments in the evenings or weekends.

Having been based not far from there before I would only use Roger from Tower Equine - but you may be hard pushed to get him now stud work has kicked in - or one of the directors from Oakham.

I don't think I've ever known of a vet who isn't 'emergencies only' evenings and weekends. If you have someone that you like the quality of their work I'd work around when they want to do it tbh.

Is this the same one you looked at that had a cough?
Same one yes! Unfortunately the owners daughter goes to school so can’t ride in the week - and can’t take a day off school! The owner doesn’t ride and works full time - I could take a day off but can’t access their house to ride the horse without someone being there. Tricky all round!

Well I would suggest that if they want to sell it they will have to sort out being there for a vetting or provide someone who could do that for them. It is not your problem.

This is how I’m feeling, it’s getting a little frustrating but all they keep saying is that their vet is flexible.
Obviously I’m not going to be using their vet 🤦🏼‍♀️

Actually in some ways you it may be better to use their vet as he/she is required to release all the horse/pony vet records to you and you can then see exactly what treatments it has received. Obviously if they have only owned the animal for a short time, or are sharp and have another vet practise for some of their work then that is not the greatest help!

Some vet practices can supply a rider for the vetting, especially if they come into the practice for the vetting (also good because then there generally will be a hard lunge area, soft lunge area and a decent trot up). Might be an option if the non-horsey parents can travel said horse?
Thank you! I didn’t know that, will ask the question xx
