Hi,

My poor 2 year old terrier x is feeling v sorry for herself today and since this morning has been hopping around on 3 legs. She seems to have hurt her hind leg, and I think she may have done it playing flyball yesterday - that is the only thing I can think off. The strange thing is though she was totally fine in the session and fine all of the rest of yesterday and last night, it is just since this morning.

She is very quiet and just lying in her bed, although I get her up every few hours to wander outside for the loo. I tried to see if she would walk a little bit to see if it would gradually go sound, incase it was just stiff but she just holds it tucked up and hops along on 3 legs - although she does occasionally put the foot down to pee, and doesn't squeak or wince.

I can't see anything wrong with her foot or claws and she is fine with us touching it all over - although tries to wiggle away.

I would take her straight to the vets and still might do, but it is just that she gets so worked up there I am worried that it will be just more stress if she has something that might just be a sprain or sore muscle. Does anyone have any ideas - is it usual for a major injury to be totally fine one day and then come on the next day? Not sure whether to wait and see or get straight to vets so opinions and experience welcome. Thanks

Could be a cruciate if it happened at agility (then are generally not sore to manipulate but do see the dog unable to weight bear/toe touch, being a bouncy breed. Its a little more common in bigger/weight bearing breeds but also in bouncy little terrier types, otherwise she may have just suffered a tear/muscle/joint strain a u suspect, I would get her check esp if she seems out of sorts with it. The vet will give her some pain relief no doubt and ask you to strictly rest her and re check her.

Thanks for the replies, I managed to get her in to see the vet last night. She thinks it is a strain of some of the muscles / ligaments in her foot / toes as couldn't get any reaction to manipulating higher up, but she slightly nibbled the vet nurse when they moved her foot around (just a tiny painless nibble!). Although she is still on three legs she is much brighter after some ani-inflammatories and quite a happy dog as we have been hiding the tablets in small pieces of gammon. Unfortunately she has to be on total rest which could get interesting as she is usually quite full of energy but so far she seems quite happy to dose in her bed with some short trips to the garden.

Hopefully she will be better soon

Sorry I am a bit laye coming in on this one.
This is exactly the same thing that happened to Jess.
Vet thought it was cruciate but luckily it wasn't.
She had lead walks for 10 days, and I gradually built up her exercise.
She is now back doing flyball and running free on her walks.
Hope your dog recovers quickly.

Thanks for your message, good to know yours is now back to full health. I have been resting her and up until just now trusting her to potter a bit in the garden...however out of the blue she just managed to catch a pigeon?! Obvisouly she is feeling better but I am mad at myself now for not keeping her on her lead....she will probably be hopping later now....definately back on the lead. She looks very happy with herself.

N.B. The pigeon did get away...she did her usual thing of putting it down to look at it and then it flew off! Luckily she doesn't seem to know how to kill things.

Poor Pigeon> bet it had the fright of it's life.
sadly, staying on lead was the only way for Jess. It was horrid, but needs must and all that.
Healing vibes for your dog.
