Vets - Taunton

Hi,
I am viewing a 2yo filly next month and am just trying to plan ahead a little bit as it is a long journey and I am only in the area for a week. If I like the filly and decide to buy I want to be there for the vetting so, does anyone know any good vets in the Taunton, Somerset area, especially for youngters? And do you think I would be best to ring in advance to let them know the situation, rather than ringing last minute asking to book a vetting within a week? And if I spoke to them and explained, would it maybe be acceptable to tentatively book a vetting to then cancel if the filly isn't right?
Obviously, when vets have been recommended on here (hopefully) I will ring up for a chat and see what they think is best, but would like ideas first.
Hope that makes sense, any ideas/opinions I haven't thought of very welcome

I've used these people twice Mount Vet Group and they have been really good. Especially after i got conned with the first horse i bought. Was really reassuring and accepting of my paranoia when vetting D and the hundred questions i hurled at him. Also they came out and vetted within a couple of days of me calling and without a prior call. I think from what i can remember that they actually have someone dedicated to doing the vetting so as not to have to fit round the usual call outs.

I would use Western Counties vets, google them. They are very good horse vet practice.

I use grant and partners who are nearby in chard, also known as isle valley equine clinic.

I use Western Counties also, they are very good. I have used them for about 12 years and always been pleased.

Isle Valley are very good horse specialist vets but personally I always use The Mount Veterinary in Wellington as they are really friendly, knowledgable, straightforward and helpful.

I would also recommend western counties equine clinic, they have very experienced equine vets, doing both first opinion and referral work.

ditto western counties as they are specialist equine clinic. Depending what side of Taunton though they may or may not cover the area (not sure what their northern limit is) but there is only one way to find out!

Thanks all for opinions and recommendations, I will start doing some ringing around. Just wanted to check that there were none to avoid at all costs or anything like that!

My sister bought a dressage horse from somerset, last yr. My vet recomended Jenny Griffen, from the Bristol vet school, as he used to work with her. She was great, spent 2 hrs, doing a full work up. Cant recomend her enough, she picked up what could have been a serious problem, making the horse pretty worthless, but after further tests / scans, he was given the all clear. It could have been a very expensive mistake!
She vetted him, within a week of booking it, we couldnt attend, so she called with a full run through of what she did and found, she couldnt have been more helpful.

Susannah at Isle Valley is fab (as are others but I use Susannah and she is a a v good peoples person and vet)

Totally irrelevant and I have no knowledge of the practice now but my father was one of the 4 original partners of the Mount Vet Group when it was called something else, long long time ago!
