Honestly, talk about a life of riley. One of the ponies needs to see the vet. It's not an emergency but it will be a call out. Vet doesn't do appointments, you get 30 minutes notice, and they won't come after 4 pm unless it's an emergency! I work 40 miles from the field, and I am a teacher so there is no question of leaving early or getting time off. The practice is a mile from the field so they are going to put in a special request for the vet to be as close to 4 as possible.
Now I appreciate them putting in a special request, but knocking off at 4? All weekend callouts are emergency only, and all week days after 4. I just think that is a little bit lazy, especially when it's a big, specialist clinic. It's not as if it's one vet struggling on his own.

It'll not be knocking off at four but probably doing emergencies, handling inpatients etc. etc. If this vet has enough money that he doesn't have to work weekends unless he wants to, good on him (bearing in mind by the time you look after inpatients and get called out to emergencies, real or not..)
We just say we would like the vet, they ring us when they can make it type thing, although do tend to let us know what day etc.
I can understand your frustration, why not vote with your feet?
 
I live in Surrey and there is no shortage of good horse vets. If you don't like the way they operate, change to a different vet. My vets give you a 2 hour slot when they will visit and obviously they cannot pin it down tighter than that. The latest normal visit will be 5.30/6pm. After 6pm is an emergency call out with an extra charge.

My vets also have a saturday surgery for normal stuff.

I agree. Can only say positive things about my vets as well.
 
Nudibranch, My vets do the same as you will give a day and then will ring 1/2 hour before. But I used to use another vet but changed after these did an open day for the BHS area. It was brilliant alot of vets were there they have a water thing that they build horses musles up in and they do specialize in horses so I would not move. Can't you box the horse there it will be alot cheaper if you can't get the time off or couldn't someone else be there for you?
 
Unfortunately haven't got access to transport atm, and need to be there myself as it's quite complex and there's a lot to discuss. There is a strong possibility we will be arranging euthanasia. Wish I could get her there, I often used to ride the TB up to get jabs, teeth done, etc. But in this case it's a leg problem so no chance of moving her. Normally it's not a huge problem but on the odd occasion things get a bit tricky, the vet's hours aren't hugely helpful.

Before we moved we had a brilliant vet, really helpful, always accommodating - he even used to treat rescued wildlife and strays for nothing more than the cost of the drugs. A real star.

When the vet phones you, talk to them and ask. Most vets (the individuals, rather than the practice in this instance) are fairly accommodating and understanding and might be willing to fit you in "after hours" so to speak. My OH will often arrange calls for early (i.e. 7.30 or earlier) or just after hours if that is the only way to fit in necessary visits on a given day.
