Can someone advise me, I have had cause recently to call the vet out to my youngster. On both occassions the vet has arrived and given him antibiotics via injection. He has then insisted on coming out the following day to give another antibiotic injection before giving powers out.
The cost of this is adding another £54 to my vet bill for the follow up visit !

Do you know if this 2nd visit is needed or would one injection of antibiotics and powders suffice ?

It depends on what is wrong with the horse. the IV antibiotics will get to work quicker, so the vet may have thought this is the best course of action!!!!

Our vet always leaves us the next day injections to do ourselves if required - however, obviously not everyone is able / would want to inject themselves and if your vet feels that he needs a second jab then theres not much you can do.

As was mentioned above IV antibiotics get to work quicker - you didn't mention why you had to phone the vet??

scotsmare, I'm assuming he only leaves you injections to go in the muscle? If it's to go i/v only a vet/VN can do it. I can't remember what my vet has normally done because I'm a vet student so I've always done it myself. If he feels a second i/v dose is needed, then I think the second visit is justified.

Ive always injected my own horses with antibiotics via muscle ( prescribed by vet ) but like the others say if its IV then you cant do it and he'll have to come out. TBH Ive never had them come out a second day they have always given powders or syringe.

Yes sorry to be so vaque it was IV ! This is the 2nd time they have been out to different cuts on him and both times have insisted on a follow up visit the next day, I'm looking for reassurance its not just a scam to make money.
