OK as my other posts explain. I have found a lovely mare and am getting her vetted but can't decided on 2 or 5

Do you need a 5 stage for lou?? price is only £3000

I know the differences however have had one 5 stage before and still had problems that could not have been noticed at the time so wonder if it is really worth the extra cost

I am fairly experienced and have a good eye for lameness HOWEVER have had some terrible bad luck for a number of years with horses SO

what would you do <font color="red"> </font> <font color="red"> </font>

I would have a proper vetting done and I would also insure the horse with a reputable company - it's all you can do really. The difference in money isn't that much when you consider how much a horse costs to buy/keep.

OK I'd have the five stage...

I don't think you can just look at the monetary value of the vet bill. Chances are there is nothing wrong with the mare and you could keep the £200 in your pocket - but the vet could notice something you haven't - something that could cost you an awful lot of money, time and heartbreak later on. I know a 5 stage isn't an insurance policy - but its an independent view from an expert on a big amount of money you are about to part with. Good luck with it : )

I have only ever had 2 stage done on my yearling as he was too young to do 5 stage. Everything else has had 5 stage. I do agree it is only how they are on the day, my WB went down with problems 7 months later, though flew her 5 stage.

Some companies also want 5 stage done before they will take the horse on depending on the value.

I never have had LOU but the most expensive horse I have had was £5,000. My current two are worth £4,000 - £5,000 each. It they were £10,000 and serious competition horses, then I would consider it as it really does put the premium up.

I do have vet fee cover, and with my current two took out a large excess of £500 to keep premiums down based on the fact that they are the type not to get problems..... Farra has just presented me with £493 for a nasty abscess and it could have been more had it not healed as well as it did.

Maybe I should have coughed up and gone for the £125 excess?

I would have the 5 stage but not bother with LOU. You pay alot more for LOU and its not worth it, the money could be put in a seperate account for a rainy day and you would still have it when you need it.

I think 5 Stage is definately worth the little extra cash it costs. As others have said it might show up a problem that might not show otherwise, whether that be lameness or a dicky heart or anything - all of which could get worse in a relatively short period of time.

As for LOU - it's personal preference really. as others have said, it could be worth you not paying it but putting the difference asside just in case. it really does depend on the value of the horse and what your intended use is. if its just local RC stuff I probably wouldn't bother but if you were going to bsja etc, I might consider it...
