I am going to view some horses at a dealers yard when they bring more 4-5 year olds over from Ireland. They are a reputable yard from what I have heard from various sources. They have all their horses 5 stage vetted before they buy them at the sales in Ireland however I am not sure how valid these 5 stage vettings would be as I've heard stores about dodgy vettings etc? for peace of mind I will probably get it re-vetted..but I'm not sure whether 5 stage would be necessary again or basic would be sufficient if the vetting is valid from Ireland. Also the yard itself is quite a way from where I live so being present for the betting might not be possible- what are peoples views on the importance of being present during the process?
 
First of all get your own vetting a done never take anyone's word for it secondly a dealer near us used to get them from Ireland sales, but they weren't actually from Ireland they were from a supplier in England, she said put Irish on a passport and you can sell anything. She said it was too expensive to ship over from Ireland.
 
I also very much doubt a person buying from a sales would get a horse vetted before buying at the sales. Sales have warranty periods if sold with warranty and that's when you get it vetted after the purchase. So already things don't ring true.
 
I think they may buy the horses then get them vetted after they've purchased I'm not entirely sure. I won't be able to have my own vet as it's so far away, I could get a vet in the local area to vet it?
 
That's a good idea make sure they are not a vet the yard uses and that you are there at the vetting x Ask on the regional boards for a vet in that area x
 
Any horses bought from the more reputable sales in Ireland (Goresbridge or Cavan International Sales) will have to have a 5 stage current vet cert from an approved vet before going through the sales ring. If they haven't they cant be sold at these venues, as simple as that. Anything the vet isnt happy with will be noted on the cert and read about by the auctioneer before bidding starts.

Regardless I would still get my own full vetting done, anything can happen between the sale ring and the eventual point of resale in the UK.

There are plenty of lower end sales in Ireland that require no health check at all, usually where the ones not capable of passing a vetting end up.
 
Yes all the horses they have are from Goresbridge and the dealer has the certificates to hand when viewing. I was thinking of getting a et in the area anyway but undecided to get a full 5 stage as they would of had a 5 stage in Ireland within the previous 2 weeks or a basic vetting. I will try and arrange a vet in the local area that isnt his local vet
