I’m looking to sell my horse and not experienced in this area, can somebody please tell me more about the vetting process?

The things I want to know specifically is if there is any cost on my behalf and if there could be any sort of backlash if he fails?

Just an FYI, there is no known reason for him to fail and if he does fail I will obviously resolve whatever issue it is (if fixable) before attempting sale again, but if a potential buyer asks if I’m open to vetting is there any reason I shouldn’t say yes?

If you’ve a buyer who wants to vet and it’s going to take a while you should ask for a deposit which will be refunded only if the horse fails the vet. If there’s a clear vet cert and buyer changes their mind that’s tough, you get to keep the deposit. Depending on the value and age of the horses some people will decide not to vet, that’s their choice. If the vetting throws up any issues it’s for you and the potential buyer to discuss and decide what’s best. I once had an unfit horse vetted which failed the flexion test, everyone was shocked but owner offered him on trial for six weeks with re vet by a second vet after that time. Horse was then in more work, passed second time and carried on as a super horse for the next 15 years.

10%.

Do you have suitable facilities for a 5 stage vetting? Hard surface for trot up, stable for eye exam and an arena or area of grass where the horse can be exercised in all paces? Something to consider. The vet will also not pass or fail a horse..they simply decide if the horse is suitable or not for the purchasers intended purpose e.g. hacking, riding club, eventer etc...depends what the person wants and whether any issues that come up would prevent them from that particular use.

At 6k most insurers will require a 5 stage vetting in order to insure. NFU I know do.
