Hi all,
Cant believe im saying this... there might be a slight chance of me getting my 1st pony trying not to get too excited as its only a maybe...

Anyway we were looking into vetting etc as I've never had to do anything like this before.
I've herd of stage 2,3&5 vetting but not sure what they consist off...
Could someone please explain to me! and also the rough costs for each if poss, i live in south-east if that's any help cost wise.
Thank you:)

Not sure where you've got three from - I've only ever heard of two and five! Explanations are here: http://www.stephenbrooksequine.co.uk/Vettings-to-buy-a-horse-102.htm

In terms of cost for a five stage (wouldn't bother with two stage as personal preference - think if you're going to vet something, get it done as fully as poss), it depends on your area and the practice concerned. I've had two done this year, the practices being within maybe 25 or so miles of each other in the Midlands, and one was £185 and the other £300 - bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' q. I'd ring round and get some quotes from vets you'd be interested in using - and use word of mouth on that one if you're not familiar with local practices.

Also, you shouldn't be using the vet the horse is currently with as a matter of impartiality but any decent vet should refuse to do it for one they have on their books atm anyway.

Fingers crossed for your ponio!

Thanks for replies, will ring round if all goes ahead and find the cheapest.

Thank you:D

I have recently used a vet in West Sussex who charged £42 callout (incl VAT) 5 Stage vetting £195 (incl VAT) and £37 for bloods to be taken and stored for 6 months.

It wasn't worth having a 2 stage (not that I wanted one) as it was £175!! The vet said he feels strongly that a 5 stage is imperative for highlighting heart/lung/lameness issues after exercise etc.

That is why he only charges £20 more.

Whereabouts in the south is the pony to be vetted?

I paid just under £250 for the 5 stage test which included blood samples (check that the horse hadn't been given anything) in the Doncaster area. I also agree that if you are going to have a vetting it is worth doing the 5 stage vetting.
