Popular vets in the area that I have had experience with are Stringer Equine, St. Davids Equine and Phoenix Equine.
I've not had a horse vetted before, but friends and people I know who have had vettings done from the above have been pleased with them, and I've always had good, professional dealings with all three of them :)

Stringer Equine are great - but guessing who you are buying from (if its a dealer) that might be their vets?

I've also used Dilliway, Bosley and Walker to vet a horse a couple of years ago and they were brilliant - I can't quite remember which particular vet I used, possibly James Bosley.

I can recommend Richard Frost of Tor Equine; they are based at Newton Abbot but also have a base at Nutwell Nr Lympstone. Richard is very thorough and would be my choice to do a vetting, I am confident he would do a good job. Have only met two of the team as we've just transferred - another of their vets is "Bess" who visited the yard recently.

Western Counties is a big equine-only practice that cover the area; a livery client had them as their vets and spoke highly of them. They are based near Ullculme but cover the whole area.

My old vet has just retired (Gordon Oxenham) which is a huge pity as I'd have recommended Gordon 101%, bless him.

my choice would be James at Southmoor, Ivybridge.
Otherwise Western counties.
Both of those have labs and could quickly test blood if they needed to for any reason.

As for X rays, then if it was me, and at 16K and depending on what you want from the horse, I would use James and I would ask him what he wanted to do. That is what I usually do and he has been right so far. Once he had seen the horse he would make a decision about X rays. (or anything else he found)

Western Counties saved my foal's life so I would be equally happy with them.

No idea of cost I am afraid, I would just be looking at the quality of the vets and I know both of those would be reliable. Southmoor as my vets have been very reasonable with their bills, they are privately owned. WC were more expensive but my horse was an inmate which was probably why.

I agree with paddy555, James MacIntosh at Southmoor is very good indeed, highly recommend, I ride his mother's horse! However, if he could not do it in the time you need Tony Kay at Phoenix is extremely nice person and very experienced.

Western Counties did Isaacs vetting - no complaints (even though had to wait 24 hours for a second opinion on the xrays) . Think it was best part of 1k but we xray'd everything bar the tail and took most of the day.

I would recommend western counties. Not sure what discipline you are aiming for but I believe Chris 's daughters are big into dressage and he has quite an eagle eye.
