Vettings... owner have to be present?

they are supposed to be, unless permission is given for a 3rd party (like YO) to be there........

however I think it is a better experience for all involved if the owner is the one there with the vet...

Why? just out of interest?

No you do not have to be present at a vetting. Ive had many vetted and not been present at any of them. Make sure its not their vet.

No, they dont HAVE to be - no rules on the subject but I would hope that they would be there or at least really trust the person they had left in charge. Vettings do vary quite a lot, depending on the vet & circumstances. I would want to be there if I was selling. Just to see exactly what was asked of the horse.

Likewise I would ALWAYS advise a purchaser to be present at the vetting if at all possible........

No you can have a 3rd party there but make sure buyer and vet are aware. I think i would try and pull strings so i could be there if possible purely so i could answer any questions and if there were any problems i wasnt getting told about them 2nd hand.

Does anyone know if the owner has to be present at the vetting of their horse?

No they don't have to be present. I found it very useful to be there at Thumper's though. And would always make a point of trying to be there.

Doesn;t owner have to sign to give permission for bloods to be taken? - I suppose if you can't be there you could delegate authority for this. However when I have had horses vetted (as a buyer) it has been useful having the owner there as the vet asked some specific questions about the horse's history.

Ok, thanks guys. It makes sense it is better for them to be there... its just depends on work commitments etc

Just book the time off. Really it is sooo much better to be present. You can discuss anything that comes up there and then with the vet and the owner. Which makes life so much easier.

An hour and half? Somewhere around that, just depends how hard they want you to work them. If he is quite fit it might take a while to get his breathing/heart rate up to the desired level.

Also depends how long the Vet likes them to rest before getting out for the last bit.

Good luck, fingers crossed for you.

I've never been present at a vetting, though i've only ever had 3 of my horses done, simply because i lived too far away from the horse i was buying and it always seemed to be when i had no holiday left. I always made sure that i have instructed a vet that 1. they had never used and 2. recommended by people in that area so at least its a known vet. The last vetting i had done i think took 2 - 2.5 hrs as D was struggling to work in the small arena that they had so had to find somewhere more suitable.

When i sold Tia I wasnt there as I couldnt get the time off, but the 'new' owners were there and my dad so it worked out well x
would of been nice to be there but works a nightmare!!

i would say yes as the vet wiull ask questiuons like - does he have sweet itch - what previous injuries etc etc - and writes it down, apparently for legal reasons

my recent 5 stage took 4 hours!

Well you have to sign for bloods which is best done by owner (I dont think you can sign under 16 as well as i thinkt hat makes it invalid) although staff where the horse is kept should know if the horse is doped etc but its on their head.

They also ask a long list of pointless questions and tend to tell you you are lying anyway so tbh you aren't missing much!
