Bit long but need some advice and guidance on thoughts of selling my beloved little horsebox for a trailer...

I bought a lovely little lvw 3.5 tonne box last year and used it every week up till November to take out my cob hacking and little oldie to local shows in hand. My cob went lame in November and was diagnosed with arthritis in his hind legs and has had the entire winter off from his usual hard work with gentle walks to keep his joints moving. The box has been SORN and I havent had the MOT done (ran out end of Jan) as I didn't see the point of spending the money for it to sit on the yard. My cob has come sound and is being managed/supplemented for his joints and I would love to get him back out hacking even if it just continues to be a summer of gentle walking. My dilemma comes in that my cob can be an argumentative loader and is not the most balanced of horses to travel with. We cracked the loading last year with endless hours spent walking on and off the box to the point he walked up by himself and my cheeky welsh will happily jump into it if he knows he's going out. I have considered a trailer may be a better option as it's lower and will offer a more stable ride, as I worry about any arguments I may have with cob trying to shoot backwards down a typical steep transit ramp and the more 'swing' a transit gives on a journey with a clumsy cob. Plus, I'm fed up of looking at the box just sat on the yard having not been used for so long and it obviously will cost more to use again with the uncertainty of the amount it will be used through the summer.

I could probably get around £3k for box as it had a brand new floor fitted and runs like a dream but I have no idea how much B+E training and test, a decent trailer (to also carry a friends 16hh youngster) and a suitable car for towing would cost. I currently have a 3 door rav 4 that I would happily sell for additional money.

Any car/trailer experts around? Trailers and the towing rules are another language to me so any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated:)

What weight is the horse you wish to tow in the trailer?
Is it just the one horse or will you need to carry two?

What vehicle will you be towing with and what are the specs -
Unladen/kerb =
GVW =
towing capacity =

I will need to buy another car suitable for towing. I would preferably be towing 2 of the horses together so they together would easily be at least a tonne. I just dont know what cars have the most suitable towing capacity!

Towing a weight of 1000 plus the weight of a 2 horse trailer on a B licence is impossible - I tried recently to find such a thing for another member who only has a B licence

You will need a B+E licence to tow 2 horses unless there are super light or ponies

I would want to take the training and test anyway as I have no experience of towing and would want to have more flexibility with weights I could tow. It's just a new world to me of towing and have no idea of costs or test centres!

Good news is that you already have a B+E provisional on the paper part of your licence and there is no theory required for B+E
That means with the correct insurance, L plates and a supervising driver who is over age 21 and has had B+E for over 3 years can sit next to you if you want to drive a B+E set up now and start practicing
Loaded or empty is allowed

In my area, Leicester, a 3 half day B+E course with test on day 3 is all inclusive for £650 if passing first time

The B+E is a one off financial outlay and lasts for as long as your B licence remains valid so basically for life

The B+E test consists of reversing as well as un/coupling in the test centre grounds then a 1 hour road drive to the same standard as your first car test
there are also a few vehicle/safety questions - like the modern car test
