Gem got kicked in the field today by another horse, and has got a deep 3 inch gash just below her hock (she shouldnt have been out with another horse, and im not happy but just trying to concentrate on her for now

) Had the vet out this evening, and theres a possibility its got the joint capsule, in which case, very serious, would need surgery and a pretty bleak prognosis from the little ive heard of these injuries

She washed it out, sutured and bandaged up this evening, and is coming back tommorow eve, when well know if she'll be okay or not. Shes had so many injuries my girlie, but none potentially this serious, ive literall been in tears all evening thinking what if's, which i know is pointless but i cant help it with the luck ive been having recently.
Any spare good luck and healing vibes for Gem, and hugs would be greatly appreciated

Oh dear - don't think of "what ifs" there is no such thing - it doesn't exist!

Fingers crossed for a good prognosis tomorrow

(((vibes and hugs from me)))

I know from exp. how awful and how difficult it is to stop yourself thinking of the what ifs but really the best thing is to concentrate on the present! Hope everything goes okay for you and your girly

Hi Nat_Gem,

Vibes + hugs, first + foremost! X

Secondly, let's all remember that all equine vets seem to diagnose the worst possible scenario (eg, i have a 28 yr old pony with a pot belly, young vet last April, doing jabs, says 'oh dear, has she had laminitis?' My response :'No' young vet then says 'but she has a huge belly + her coat is uneven', my response 'she's been that shape since i got her in 1986, shortly before she foaled, + she's losing her winter coat'. Young vet then says 'she's probably got Cushings' (Eh? No symptoms.) Young vet then said 'it costs a lot for the test, you know, may not be worth it, because of her age'

Ah p*** off, you plonker, i thought!!

Thirdly, and very importantly, in your case, if the joint was involved, then surely as your vet is there, soon after, she would recognise if joint fluid is present - ie, if capsule had been penetrated?

Any subsequent infection won't show up for days, not by tomorrow.

I sincerely hope Gem is fine, which is main thing, wishing you well. Love BS x

PS: Used to work at riding school, one of best horses went lame behind, owner insisted on poulticing hock, joint fluid coming out, i'm not happy but don't have a say...(vet was somewhat, er - mad - when eventually called)
Outcome was that horse was fine (regardless). Bless him x

It's terrible when these things happen but, 9 times out of 10 they're never as bad as we imagine they're going to be. As Brandy Snap said, if there was any joint fluid leaking out the vet should have recognised this on their visit.

Sounds like you had the vet out nice an early on and they've done the necessary. My sisters' horse was (we think) kicked just eblow his hock a few weeks ago - it wasn't a huge deep wound but he was quite sore and the leg swelled but we just kept him out with his pals (he wasn't lame really just a little sore), kept an eye on it and kept it clean and it's healed up fine.

Horses do some horrific things to themselves injury wise and a lot of the time it looks worse than it is and they bounce back fine.

Hope your horse gets better soon!

Hugs and thoughts hun. As B says, the vet would have seen if joint oil was present.

Tiggy managed to cut her hock in the stable (don't ask, we never did figure out how!). Vet sounded worried on the phone, came down straight away; wound had missed the capsule by millimetres, but the point is, the vet said if it had penetrated, then joint oil would have been present.

All crossed for Gem.

We experienced something similar a few years ago. I was often at the point of giving up...the wound got much worse before it got better..but it did get better and now you would never know.

When the vet turned out, he pulled a miserable face, said to cut my losses..no way, as long as the mare was willing to try, so were we.

Just keep going. Will keep fingers crossed for you.

My lad had a kick just below his hock a couple of months ago...grossly swollen leg, stiff on walking, lame when trotting. Antibiotics, painkillers,cold-hosing and turnout sorted him out within a week......vets always make out its worse than it is so that when the horse is fine, the get the glory and the gratefulness of us owners

Fingers crossed hun
