My darling old boy who is 36 had an accident today. My uncle put them out at lunchtime as the weather was so bad. They only went out for a couple of hours. When he went to get them in my boy was down in the field. Apparently he had got his back leg stuck between two fence posts and gone down. My uncle couldn't get him out so went for help from the staff on the yard. They removed one of the post and got him up. My uncle hosed his leg and decided not to tell me or ring the vet as it didn't look bad.

When I got down tonight he was a bit sorry for himself and his leg had scrapes on both sides and is a bit swollen. He looks to have banged the other leg too. Strangely enough he is not really lame although he is resting the leg. Thank god for tough old cobs, I suspect many horses would have broken the leg in that situation.

I gave him a nice brush as he was covered in mud, even though he was rugged. Covered us both in purple spray, gave him a couple of bute, a walk round the yard for some grass and then put him to bed. If its worse in the morning I will call the vet

So grateful to the Joe and Amy from the yard for getting him out and my uncle for finding him and dealing with it.

Here are some pics, hope I was right to think the vet was not needed tonight. I dont think there is any infection, just knocks, and I have always said I wouldn't let them take him off the yard for treatment at his age.

Just praying he's OK in the morning. Excuse the feet, he's learning to go barefoot after wearing shoes for over 30 years.

Aw bless him, sending vibes your way :) I'm sure he'll be feeling much better in a couple of days with some rest and tlc x

Bless him. Hope he isn't too sore/stiff in the morning. Lovely old gent. I would have done the same thing as you though regarding calling vet.

<<<<<vibes>>>>>> for the old man.
If he's weight-bearing on it, I expect he'll be fine.

I know exactly what you mean about only treating him on the yard. We say exactly the same bout our 30 yr old.

Poor little mite he looks a bit sheepish on the pics. Leg aside he looks fabulous for his age and I love hearing updates on him. I really hope he's ok tomorrow and please update us x

Lucky you to have had everything taken care of while you were out..I would have done the same regarding vet....he was probably a bit shocked from it too poor lad... my 26yr old tb mare slipped in box and got stuck half in half out-trully awfully wedged. I thought it was 'that' time. She had a hot bran mash to warm her normal supper after everything was calm & tranquil again and a drop of the goats brandy in my coffee and all was well other than being a bit sore for a few days.

if hes weight bearing he should be fine..poor old boy will prob feel it for a few days as any of us would..nice bit of hot & cold to bring the swelling down (may or may not show) epsom salts won't hurt either..and poss loosely bandage his back legs if in if hes feeling it a bit, just for support. I do prescribe some juicy carrots too...and tonnes of tlc& hugs..hope he's feeling better in the morning xx

Thank you for all your good wishes for the old man.

I'm glad no-one thinks I should have got the vet tonight. I always hate having to make that decision. I just didn't see what they would do for him that I hadn't at this stage.

I'm also glad its not only me who uses the old fashioned bran mash :D he had one for his tea.

SaharaS I'm not sure if you had the goats brandy in coffee or the horse did :D

Will definately hose it and I have plenty of poultice if necessary. The only real reason I will need the vet is if it get infected I think. Will probably wrap it in cling film and let him go out for a bit to keep him moving tomorrow, if he's not got worse.

Will get him some carrots and apples in the morning, he needs spoiling.

:D Just to clarify..brandy belongs to the goats 1st aid kit! As I am incapable of even walking past a sealed bottle without becoming wildly intoxicated(-you need only let me touch the label & I keel over before the lid is off!) I cannot confirm if my mare had a swig or not, but she wasn't meant to..the starbucks is MINE!!!:D I forgot to mention honey or sugar (or both crammed into any iffy areas..even honey & salt) then dressed.brown paper(feed sack) also great as won't sweat as much. Its a shame its so wet as letting the air get to it would help.

Yes..am huge fan of simple old feeds..bran mash has such a comforting smell about it..its like roast dinnner & yorkshire puds for horses followed by apple crumble & custard....just a few less calories!:D

Apple cider vinegar in his feed or water will help to-its a natural anti biotic.

As a rule, I don;t call a vet out if I am confident in dealing with it myself, unless it needs meds..tho if unsure, I never worry about ringing even out of hours and simply discussing it with vet even sending pics by email or text before now..tho you have to have a good trusting vet as some have to come out to confirm its a horse each time before trusting you!

Only thing I thought was is his tetanus up to date..that would be my only worry. I'm sure he'll be fine.. now, brandy mash for you and get some sleep!;-)x

Hope he is none the worse for his adventure this morning. What a boy eh? Looks fabulous and yes he does look a bit sheepish :)

I must admit if either of mine come in with something like that I do tend to leave them a day or so to see what happens, provided it's not obviously gushing blood or in need of vet attention. I can't count how many times my youngster has bumped herself in the field and come in looking a bit off but been fine the next morning so no I wouldn't have called the vet out right away either. (Hopes I won't get shot down in flames now for being a careless owner!)

I hope he's better this morning. :) x

Thank you again, he's better this morning, leg still swollen but no worse. Hes not resting it now but that could be the 2 Bute.

He had a bran, treacle and Bute breakfast, then a tour of the yard eating weeds :D went back to his stable with a huge thistle hanging out of his mouth, took him ages to eat it.

The weather is pretty good here today so I smothered a whole tub of Sudacrem on his leg and put him out. He pulled me across to the gate and trotted off into the field.

Funny thing, both the mares ran over to see him, they dont usually. Obviously they saw what happened yesterday, you dont expect them to put things together, but they seemed pleased to see him.

SaharaS - yes his injections are up to date. Bet your mare gets the Starbucks when you aren't looking :D

Glad he's feeling ok, he will be better outside moving around, you are lucky with the weather it's been peeing down all day here and never stopped all night either:(

He is looking great and so shiny.

So glad he is much better this morning. I have to say that his condition is a real credit to you.....at 36 years of age he looks fantastic...even as a much younger horse he would also be looking fantastic.:)
