Video - *GRAPHIC* - is this normal in the racing world?

Yes break downs do happen but I dont think that they run the events that that these clips were taken from in the uk.

I had to stop that half way through..

Yes breakdowns happen in racing all over the world. This video shows it to the extreme though. I have retrained and sold/rehomed horses who are said to of 'broken down' on the track..The term doesnt always mean broken bones, heart attacks etc.

Yup. I watched it. Emotionaly charged propaganda from PETA, as usual.
I don't think we run breeze ups in UK anyway, do we?

Yes we do have breeze ups in the UK. on grass though and they aren't quite like the American ones. Running on dirt is much, much more dangerous as the speed they travel at is immense.

I blinking hate PETA for the record. No organisation has ever done less for animal welfare frankly!

Do we? Ah, well, you learn something new every day :D

In full agreement about PETA.

Have seen the video quite a few times before - and it makes for very sober viewing, PETA propaganda or not......

That's because PETA aren't an animal welfare organisation. They're an animal rights group. I hate them with a passion - they're lying, hypocritical scum, who kindle dissent which I can only imagine is for the purpose of anarchy, since they seem to have little care for the animals they claim to fight for.

eta - the video is vile, yes, but injuries happen, out hacking, xc, sj, in the field, in the stable...

Very sad.

I have to say I think the surface they run on over there plays a big part in these breakdowns. I remember seeing George Washington break down, I think it was the breeders cup? In the states a few yrs ago. There had been so much rain the track had become very unstable and they were going through it to the concrete surface below! That was a top class horse and i think it might have been his first ever run on that type of surface. I think the speeds they are running a physically very immature animal and crap surfaces = massive risk of breakdown.

That video is awful. The horse whos foot snaps completely and is flopping around, i was in tears.
I have to say, the americans don't give a good impression with horse welfare, with this and the Tennese walking horses they have.

I am all for letting the hores mature and backing at about 3 y/o.

I have made it on to both PETA and HSA's mailing lists somehow.

I need creative ideas as to how to tell them that no, I won't be supporting either of them.

I think it was the guide dogs for the blind who have sold my details :(
