I know that this forum isn't a vet substitute but I have the vet out tomorrow to Cobby and he's pretty good at patching up the dog if necessary :) However I am a little worried about this as it was quite sudden and he's never done it before (he's 6). The video is from the end of the 'fit', it was a lot heavier and lasted about 2 minutes. Has anyone come across this before? Do I need to panic :o ? Thank you :)

Are his gums a healthy pink ? Breathing normal ? Temperature ? Could he of got into something poisenous ?

Personally if he has had a fit, I would be getting him seen tonight or at the very least calling the vet.

The 'photo' is a video, if you click on it you will see what I mean. He hasn't a fit in the normal sense of the word, more like a weird breathing "thing" (I don't know how else to put it). He's completely normal in every other way :)

can't get the vid to work- takes me to mobile version of photobucket but has a broken link tab instead of the vid.

He's completely fine, even at the time he didn't seem that concerned about it  As I said in my OP the vet coming to the horse tomorrow (incidentally for a breathing problem  :D) is happy to have a quick nosy at the dog if I ask him to. I'm not worried enough to take him to the OOH vet but obviously I'm concerned :)

Did he just start doing that when he was asleep? It looks almost like a form of reverse sneezing, no harm in showing the vet that video and see what he says.

Yes, he was asleep when it started very suddenly. He didn't seem at all upset during or after the episode and was completely fine immediately after. During the "fit" (for want of a better word!) it was on every breath and quite fast, every breath was quite deep.

OK, thank you! What causes it, is it serious?

ETA: I've just googled it and come across this :"During a reverse sneeze, the dog will make rapid and long inspirations, stand still, and extend his head (and neck). A loud snorting sound is produced..." However he didn't do this, does that mean it's something else or that he really is just a strange dog?!

BHB, backward sneezing is nothing to be alarmed about. And your dog is having a mild one! One of my Lurchers does it, really loudly, and gets in a right heaving state.

I find stroking them quietly under the chin and throat helps. :)

Thank you all for putting my mind at rest :) It was quite worrying, especially as pony's COPD is flaring up at the moment as well

Oh I will be, this evening :) However the fact that he was completely fine immediately before and after the incident makes me concerned more than OMG I need to go to the vets NOW IYSWIM? Also having googled it and watched some vet videos my mind is more at rest :)
