off to look at some trailers next weekend, need some advice on what to look for? obviously the floor brakes etc but what else? also what best way of checking floor?
if we end up buying one will have it serviced before putting horses in it.

You should remove any mats that are in the trailer and if they have left bedding in there, ask for it to all be swept out. Then you take a screwdriver and poke the floor with it. You will soon find any soft spots. You need to get underneath it and do the same thing. You also want to plug the lights in, to check they work. If they do not, it is relatively cheap to get them re-wired, but a new floor can be more expensive.

Check the plastic roof light is sound because they are hard to replace in some models and can be very expensive.

Take a good torch with really good batteries for when you are underneath it, and some safety goggles, so the crap doesn't get in your eyes.

Check the tyre walls are not cracked, even if the trailer has not been used, the tyres will perish over time, 5 years is the shelf life of a tyre, so if they are the original tyres, on a 10 year old trailer, they really need to be replaced.

Make sure that the trailer is fitted with trailer tyres and not car tyres as these are not suitable for trailers. Trailer tyres are inflated up to 80 p.s.i.
When it is serviced check the floor and the ramp from both the top side and underneath, the wheel bearings, the brakes, the electrics, the tow hitch and the partition fixtures.
