Yay or Nay?

Any of your experiences greatly appreciated. And also explanation of LOU % very greatfuly received!! :D

I'm trying to decide whether to insure my new horse for LOU. He is 5 year old with clean 5* vetting certificate as of yesterday.

I am only thinking of this route as my last horse has been retired for 4 years with navicular and i have only now been able to afford a new horse.

I don't know if i'd be better of by having a bog standard insurance with a £5000 vet fees and by putting by some money away each month in case of a disaster which would render him incapable of doing what i brought him for (RC activities going on to BE) He is not an 'expensive' horse, but its not the type of money i could come up with over a few months! :)

....although if this happens again i think i would just give up! :(

Thank you for reading :)

My cob was insured for LOU and had to claim it. I used the insurance money for more treatment for him because my vet bill was 13 thousand and still riseing. No problems getting the money was with pet plan trying to get more than field insurance after was a nightmare. As after treatment i could hack him but couldnt get insurance to take him on the roads. All mine are insured for LOU but its very expensive.

It is very expensive and you must read the policy very carefully. At one time the NFU said generously that Loss of Use covered anything that the horse was insured for, but not sure if that is still in place, probably not.

It may be worth it if you are eventing and doing energetic things as the horse could well have a career threatening injury (just to cheer you up!).

I used to have it with mine but stopped it when he got to 12 as I thought they wouldn't pay out at that age anyway.

Yes LOU is expensive and you get a maximum of 80% depending on the horses limitations. To get the full % the horses needs to be unable to be ridden in the future according to a vet.
My WB has just been branded for LOU. Worth taking out if you need to claim and horse is of high value.

Thanks every one so far.

Can anyone explain about how the % work, or us it do different for different insurance companies?
