Hey guys

I've been swithering on whether to feed boiled barley and boiled linseed as a conditioner and for weight gain.

Can you give me your views and experience with both. What are your methods for boiling both? Amounts for both? Is boiled barley heating? How long does it keep once boiled?

I've been told to either boil the barley for 2 hours (until soft) or to pour boiling water over it and leave it to soak until cool with a damp towel over the bucket (to sort of steam it).

Any info welcome

Mum used to boil this up years ago for our old arab who as she entered her 20s would drop weight in winter.

I feed instant linseed - more expensive than boiling it yourself but far less hassle.

You can buy so many good conditioning feeds now - and you can get barley as barley rings that personally I would do this but I have so little free time as it.

That said, you can't beat the smell of cooking barley - yum yum. Mum used to do it on the rayburn or if she needed it quickly in the pressure cooker.

I used to boil barley and linseed years ago, but these days I feed micronised barley (which is heat treated so basically makes it more digestible just as the boiling does) and use vegetable oil if I want extra condition and shine.

We used to feed boiled barley, mum used to put it in a big bowl and put it in the microwave. Or cook it on the hob for a couple of hours until it looks like equine risotto!! Smells great and always loved mixing it into the evening feed warm.
