My horse is on full livery with a yard that looks after them really well but with a very controlling yard manager. Today she advised me not to ride as they had been shooting in the field next to where the horses had been out and my horse in particular was very stressed out and was difficult to catch and bring in so she said she would lunge him in side reins etc and whenever she thinks your horses are a little bit on their toes she also lunges them. Surely this is going to get my horse fitter and fitter and he is going to feel very well. what is your opinion on this

I would think this is a plus because then you could get on and ride after the horse has been lunged and has had a chance to have a good knees up without you on board.

Thats the trouble with some full livery yard managers, they can start to think that they know best and take over your horse in a baaaad way. On the other had she may have been genuinely concerned and thinking she was being really helpful....

You can never tell.

I would welcome my YO doing this for me as I would then be able to ride without lungeing the horse myself. If you don't like her doing it couldn't you thank her for doing it on this occasion but tell her that you'd rather she didn't do it again?

I wouldn't be chuffed about this, mind you it would be fun to see someone trying to single line lunge Mr T anyway as he doesn't do it well in a normal school, hence I always lunge him with two lines. To get back to the OP point I wouldn't be too happy for my horse to be lunged in side reins without me seeing exactly how tight or hard the horse was worked. Maybe make a request for lunging to be kept to a minimum, just makes the horse fitter and more lively IMO.

I'd be quite cross if she did this without my permission, but then i don't really like my horses lunged. If you feel it's necessary and are happy for her to then thats fine, but if your not then i would say something.

Depends if your livery yard formally includes excercising or not. If it does and they offer a mix of lunging and/or riding then fine if you are happy to allow them to decide (which it seems is not the case).

if she's doing it 'off her own bat' then... that's one of the reasons I don't keep my horses at livery. I will always be the one who decides if my horse is OK to ride and personally prefer to just get on then let them 'let off steam' on the lunge.

To me lunging is work and they will do it properly so I'd prefer to deal with sharpness under saddle where can control it better than on lunge.

I'd ask what made her think you couldn't manage your own horse.. but then I'm an awkward tart!

I'd be pleased. A YM with a horse on full livery should care about all aspects - sounds as if this is what's happening. Can't see the problem, honestly, as long as YM is a knowledgable person.

I'd say "thanks very much for warning me he might be on his toes" and then carry on and do whatever you want, its your horse! If you don't want your horse lunged by her, just say that its because you enjoy doing all the exercising yourself. Unless you're paying them for exercise, in which case suppose you'll have to live with it.
