Whilst walking my dog on the muck heap this morning I found a bit just poking out of the muck.

I pulled it out and it was pretty much black with tarnish but i liked the look of it so took it home.

After a good scrub with some vinegar and table salt paste it has come up lovely, far nicer than I expected.

It is stamped with 'Never-Rust' and 'Made in England'

I have googled it and they seem to be a very old make of bit, made from nickel.

Was wondering if any one has heard of this make or any other info?

Here it is all clean, a lovely example of a loose ring mouthing bit.

Hi all,

I realize this is a rather old post, but I have a follow-up question on it. Whilst rummaging through the old barn at our stables, I came across a rather unique-looking bar bit. I have never seen anything like it, nor can I find anything about it or find a similar one online. It too is stamped woth "made in England" and "never rust", but the pelham effect on the side it nothing like any other bar I have ever seen before. Can anyone help me out? What kind of bit is it? What sport is it used for? Are they still in production? What company makes/made them?

If put “never rust horse bit” into Google are some hits. Other examples on sale as vintage or on ebay.

Since having responded to this original thread this afternoon, I continued my search (2nd afternoon... I couldn't let it go ?) and have finally found a similar bit! It seems to be a Spanish Western style baroque bar bit, and it is referred to as "S Shape and Rose". Though the shape of the shanks are the same, all versions I have found of this bit since, are all made very differently than the one I have. Now that I know the model and its purpose, I wish to find out more about the company that produced it, and discover its approximate age. Does anyone know which English companies stamped their bits with "never rust"?

Thanks for all your help so far! I greatly appreciate all the help during my neurotic search (I can't let go of things until I figure it out ??)

Until you said that,RA I was thinking that it looked like a driving bit with keys for mouthing a young horse.
